Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays Betting Prediction

The Boston Red Sox enter this matchup second in the AL East standings, 13 games behind the New York Yankees for first place. The Red Sox swept the Cleveland Guardians in their most recent three-game series and had won seven straight games prior to the start of this series. That streak has been broken as the Red Sox have now lost two straight games to Toronto after Tuesday night’s loss. Boston’s offense struggled in game one with just eight hits and two runs on the day. The bullpen was not much better, giving up 10 hits and seven runs. This was a bit uncharacteristic for a Red Sox team that is averaging 4.77 runs per game (5th) with a team ERA of 3.59 (6th) this season. Third baseman Rafael Devers has been huge for the Red Sox with a batting average of .333 (97-291), 17 home runs, and 45 RBIs.

Toronto is currently third in the AL East standings, 12 and a half games behind the New York Yankees for first place. Toronto most recently 1-2 SU in a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers and have gone 5-5 SU over their last 10 games. The Blue Jays looked great against the Red Sox in game-one, scoring seven runs on 10 hits while the bullpen gave up eight hits and two runs. Game two did not come as easily as the Blue Jays headed into the bottom of the ninth inning down 5-4. Bo Bichette brought in the game tying run while Vladimir Guerrero Jr brought in the game winning run with a single to left field. Guerrero Jr is having another nice season for Toronto with a batting average of .268 (72-269), 18 home runs, and 45 RBIs.

Wednesday’s matchup will be the tenth meeting between these two teams on the season. Toronto has won five of the games, including the first two games of this series. I like that trend to continue and for the Blue Jays to complete the series sweep Wednesday. The Red Sox have struggled to get much going over the first two games and things will be no easier going against right-handed pitcher Alex Manoah. Manoah has been one of Toronto’s best pitchers with a 9-2 record and an ERA of 2.05. Not a whole lot of value in the Blue Jays moneyline, so will be playing the runline here.

Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays – Pitching Matchup

Boston: Nick Pivetta (8-5, 3.25 ERA)

Boston ace Nick Pivetta toes the rubber for his 15th start of the season as he looks to improve on a 8-5 mark and 3.25 ERA. The right-hander has put together a 1.10 WHIP to go along with 86 strikeouts and 29 walks in 88.2 innings of work. Pivetta added another win to his record in his most recent start against Cleveland Guardians, as Boston’s right-hander surrendered two runs on nine hits, and four strikeouts during the Red Sox’ 3-6 road loss on June 24, 2022. In eight road starts this season, Pivetta has compiled a 4-3 record in 46.2 innings, while striking out 46, walking 14 batters, and putting together a 3.66 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.

Toronto: Alek Manoah (9-2, 2.05 ERA)

Alek Manoah is on the hill for the Blue Jays in this contest as he makes his 14th start of the season hoping to build some positive momentum. He comes in 9-2 with a 2.05 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, 18 walks and 79 strikeouts over 87.2 innings of work this season. Manoah is 5-1 with a 2.15 ERA across 15 home starts this season, which includes seven walks, 41 strikeouts, and a 0.80 WHIP over 46 innings of action.
