New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians Betting Prediction

The New York Yankees are currently first in the AL East standings with a 12 and a half game lead over the second-place Boston Red Sox. The Yankees lost to the Astros on Thursday night 2-1. Prior to that game, New York went 3-0 SU in a three-game series with the Athletics and have won six of their last 10 games. New York’s offense could not get anything going on Thursday night with just five hits and one run. The Yankees are rarely held to one run as they are averaging 4.98 runs per game (1st) this season. The bullpen played well against Houston, holding the Astros to just three hits and two runs. New York’s bullpen has been one of the best in the league with a team ERA of 2.92 (1st).

The Cleveland Guardians enter this matchup second in the AL Central standings, one game behind the Minnesota Twins for first place. The Guardians most recently went 3-1 SU in a series with the Twins but have lost six of their last 10 games. Cleveland's offense was shutout in game two against the Twins but were better in the other three games with a combined 15 runs scored. This is a bit above their season average of 4.43 runs per game (17th). The Guardians bullpen struggled in game two against Minnesota, giving up six runs but held them to a combined 11 runs in the other three games. This is right around their season ERA of 3.86 (18th).

The Yankees have gone 3-0 SU against the Guardians this season. I think that trend continues and New York wins game-one of this series. The Yankees will have a huge advantage on the mound with Gerrit Cole expected to get the start. Cole is 6-2 with an ERA of 2.99 this season. Aaron Civale is scheduled to take the mound for the Guardians. Civale has struggled this season with a 2-4 record and ERA of 7.20. I expect the Yankees offense to have a big day against Civale and secure a win. Not much value in the Yankees MoneyLine so will play the runline here.

New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians – Current Form

The Yankees won 3-0 against the Athletics last Wednesday, but lost 0-3 to the Astros in their next game on Thursday. New York allowed only one run on Tuesday in the second of three contests against the Athletics.

Scoring nine runs against the Oakland Athletics on Monday’s first game in the series was their best performance in their last four games. The Guardians lost against the Red Sox last Sunday 3-0, but climbed back up by winning against the Twins last Thursday. Game two with the Minnesota Twins was Cleveland’s worst in the last seven, as they failed to produce a single run. The Guardians were the weakest on Tuesday, not managing any runs in game two of a four-contest series against the Twins.

The Guardians were the weakest on Sunday, when the Boston Red Sox scored eight runs in game two of a three-contest series against the Red Sox.

New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians – Pitching Matchup

New York: Gerrit Cole (6-2, 2.99 ERA)

The Yankees’ right-hander Gerrit Cole owns a 6-2 record and 2.99 ERA in his 15th start of the season. Cole also posted a 1.01 WHIP, while striking out 111 and walking 23 batters in 87.1 innings this season. Cole got assigned the loss in his last start, which came at home against the Houston Astros on June 25, 2022. He threw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in an eventual 0-3 Yankees defeat. Cole owns a 3-0 road record this season in seven starts away from Yankee Stadium. In those away outings, he has posted a 3.93 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, 16 walks, and 48 strikeouts in 36.2 innings of work.

Cleveland: Aaron Civale (2-4, 7.20 ERA)

Cleveland's Aaron Civale toes the rubber for his ninth start of the season as he looks to improve on a 2-4 mark and 7.20 ERA. The right-hander has put together a 1.60 WHIP to go along with 39 strikeouts and 13 walks in 40 innings of work. Civale lost his most recent start against the Boston Red Sox, as Cleveland’s right-hander surrendered three runs on eight hits, three walks, and two strikeouts during the Guardians’ 3-8 home loss on June 26, 2022. In his four home starts this season, Civale is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, five walks and 18 strikeouts over 20 innings of work.
