New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox Betting Predictions

The New York Yankees enter this matchup first in the AL East standings, 15.0 games ahead of the second place Boston Red Sox. New York won the first two games of this series but lost in game three and have won six of their last 10 games. Saturday’s game-three against Boston was a close one with the Yankees losing 6-5 in 10 innings. The offense was solid with 10 hits and five runs, but the bullpen struggled towards the end of the game, allowing Boston 10 hits and five runs. New York has now scored 23 runs throughout this series while allowing the Red Sox 16. Right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon is scheduled to start Sunday. Taillon is 9-2 in 16 games this season with an ERA of 3.63 and has given up 92 hits, 36 earned runs, and struck out 74 batters in 89.1 innings.

Boston is currently second in the AL East standings, 15.0 games behind the Yankees for first place. The Red Sox struggled in the first two games of this series but managed to take game three and snap a four-game losing streak. Boston’s offense scored five runs in both games one and two of this series and six in game-three. The injured bullpen has really struggled throughout this series, allowing the Yankees 24 total runs. The right-hander Nick Pivetta is expected to take the mound Sunday. Pivetta is 8-6 in 17 games this season with an ERA of 3.68 and has given up 82 hits, 41 earned runs, and struck out 95 batters in 100.1 innings of work.

The runs have been flowing this series with a total of 39 runs combined scored. I expect that trend to continue and for the total to go over Sunday. It is usually wise to stay away from the over when the Yankees are playing due to how good their bullpen has been, but the Red Sox have proven they can score runs with 16 scored in this series. It should be another exciting game on Sunday and enough runs to push the total over.

New York Yankees Betting Analysis

Following Saturday’s loss, the Yankees are now 61-24 SU, 43-42 ATS, and have an O/U record of 38-44-3. The total has gone under in 12 of their last 20 games against the Red Sox. Going against this trend, the total has gone over in in six of their last seven against AL East opponents. The Yankees are 5-3 SU in their last eight road games and 27-15 SU on the road this season.

New York has been great with their bats throughout the season. As a team the Yankees have a batting average of .244 (14th), on base percentage of .327 (2nd), slugging percentage of .442 (2nd) and have scored 442 runs (1st). Center fielder Aaron Judge has been a big part of this offense with a batting average of .282 (87-308), 30 home runs, and 64 RBIs. Third baseman DJ LeMahieu has been solid as well with a batting average of .265 (73-275), eight home runs, and 34 RBIs.

The Yankees bullpen has been one of the best in the business this season. As a team they are allowing opponents a batting average of .213 (2nd), have a WHIP of 1.07 (1st), and have an ERA of 2.95 (2nd). Right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon is scheduled to start Sunday. Taillon is 9-2 in 16 games this season with an ERA of 3.63 and has given up 92 hits, 36 earned runs, and struck out 74 batters in 89.1 innings. In his most recent start against the Pirates, striking out five batters in 5.1 innings while giving up six hits and five runs.

Boston Red Sox Betting Analysis

After beating the Yankees in extra innings on Saturday, Boston is now 46-39 SU, 47-38 ATS, and have an O/U record of 35-41-9. The Red Sox are 3-10 SU in their last 13 games against the Yankees and 2-4 SU in their last six games. The total has gone over in six of their last eight games against AL East opponents but just eight of their last 20 against the Yankees. Boston is 22-20 SU at home this season.

The Red Sox have been good with their bats for the most part this season. As a team Boston has a batting average of .260 (1st), on base percentage of .324 (5th), slugging percentage of .414 (8th) and have scored 396 runs (7th). Left fielder Alex Verdugo has been having a nice season for the Red Sox with a batting average of .253 (76-300), six home runs, and 43 RBIs. Keep an eye on third baseman Rafael Devers who is listed as day-to-day and has been Boston’s top hitter this season with a batting average of .327, 19 home runs, and 51 home runs.

Boston’s bullpen has struggled in this series but have been good throughout the season. As a team they are allowing opponents a batting average of .234 (8th), have a WHIP of 1.23 (12th), and have an ERA of 3.78 (11th). The right-hander Nick Pivetta is expected to take the mound Sunday. New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox Betting Conclusion

I am going to stay away from picking a side in this matchup and instead play the total. I expect the over to hit as 39 combined runs have been scored in this series. Pivetta and Taillon both struggled in their most recent starts which could carry over into this one. Regardless, both offenses have been hitting the ball this series and Sunday should be no different. Backing the over here.
