While Oscar Gonazalez may not have the name appeal like Aaron Judge or Mike Trout, we’re getting a great price on someone who is flying way under the radar today. The 24-year old outfield is already being shown a lot of trust by this Guardians team, putting up good numbers and even batting clean up yesterday (for a team in a legit playoff race, trusting a young guy like that is pretty impressive).
Over 147 AB’s this season, Gonzalez is batting .299 on the season, .320 vs RHP, and .483 vs DET. Since coming back from injury, he’s batting .375 with 1+ hit in all 6 games (2+ in 3/6). While this is obviously a small sample size, he gets a great matchup against Drew Hutchinson, who rates out far below average in legitimately every single category on baseball savant, including xBA, xSLG, K%, Barrel% and much more. Hutchinson throws 4SFB/Slider to RHH, which Oscar bats .345/.315 against this season.
Now that we’ve done the heavy lifting on an up-and-coming rookie, let's go to one of the most consistent hitters in baseball to pair him with. If there's one thing Trea Turner does better than steal bases, it's cash hit parlays. Turner is coming into this game playing very well, recording 1+ hit in 24 of his last 25 games, bringing this season's batting average to .306 (9th in MLB).
While his recent form is good, he also has great history against Sonny Gray going 7-16 with 2 XBH. While Gray is definitely having a good season, he’s mostly been capped at around 5 innings and Turner has success against him for good reason. Against Grays top 3 pitches, Turner is batting an insane .368/.313/.370 this year. It may be a tougher matchup but that's why we are getting such a good number, Trea is fairly matchup-proof at this point.
