Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees Betting Prediction

Tampa Bay enters this matchup second in the AL East standings, four and a half games behind the New York Yankees for first place. If unable to catch the Yankees by the end of the season, the Rays are currently first in the AL Wild Card race. Tampa Bay most recently swept Boston in a three-game series and have won eight of their last 10 games. Both sides of the ball have played extremely well over that stretch. The offense has averaged 4.7 runs per game, a bit higher than their season average of 4.25 runs per game. Meanwhile, the Rays bullpen has a team ERA of 2.2 over their last 10 games, well below their season ERA of 3.25 (3rd). The right-hander Drew Rasmussen (9-4, 2.70 ERA) is scheduled to start for Tampa Bay Friday.

New York is currently atop the AL East standings with a four and a half game lead over the second place Rays. The Yankees have struggled since returning from the All-Star break and could end up as a Wild Card team if they cannot finish the season strong. They went 3-1 SU in their most recent series with the Minnesota Twins and are 5-5 SU over their last 10 games. After leading the league in all major batting categories in the first half of the season the Yankees do not rank quite as high with a batting average of .238 (20th), on base percentage of .322 (5th), slugging percentage of .422 (6th) and have scored 675 total runs (4th). The bullpen has remained consistent since returning from the break with a WHIP of 1.10 (3rd) and team ERA of 3.28 (4th). Right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas (5-11, 3.79 ERA) is expected to start Friday.

I like Tampa Bay to win game of this series. Rasmussen has pitched well this year and I expect him to see success against this Yankees offense that has been inconsistent as of late. Montas did have a solid outing against the Rays this past Monday, giving up just one hit and zero runs in 5.0 innings of work, but I think Tampa’s offense will be more productive this time around. Backing the Rays moneyline in this matchup.

Score Prediction: Rays 4, Yankees 3

Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees – Current Form

The Rays have played excellent recently, highlighted by Tampa Bay posting back-to-back series victories over Marlins and Red Sox squads, resulting in a solid 5-0 record across that window. In the third contest against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Rays were in their best form in the last five games, not allowing the Boston Red Sox score one single run. The Yankees lost against the Angels last Wednesday with 2-1, but climbed back up by winning against the Twins last Thursday. They limited the Minnesota Twins to just one run in the third contest of the series on Wednesday.
