The Cardinals will visit Padres at Petco Park for the second of a three-game set on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.

The Cardinals currently pace the National League Central with a record of 87-62, despite owning a lackluster 36-35 record away from Busch Stadium on the year. San Diego is in second place in the National League West with a record of 82-66 overall and 39-31 at home, which trails Milwaukee by 21.5 games for the division lead.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Diego Padres Betting Prediction

Prior to the results of game-one on Tuesday night, the Cardinals are first in the NL Central standings with a nine-game lead over the second place Milwaukee Brewers. St. Louis most recently went 3-2 SU in a five-game series with Cincinnati and have won six of their last 10 games. This team has been playing consistently well in the second half of the season on both sides of the ball. The Cardinals offense ranks amongst the best in the league with a batting average of .254 (8th), on base percentage of .327 (4th), slugging percentage of .423 (7th) and have scored 713 total runs (4th). The bullpen does not rank quite as high as the offense but have still been solid throughout the season with a WHIP of 1.26 (15th) and team ERA of 3.79 (9th). The right-hander Mike Mikolas (11-12, 3.46 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Cardinals on Wednesday.  

The Padres are trying to hold onto their playoff dreams as they currently second in the NL Wild Card race with a two-game lead over the third place Phillies. San Diego won three of four games in their most recent series against Arizona and have won six of their last 10 games. Although they are in the playoff picture, San Diego has been too inconsistent throughout the entire season to make any sort of run. Their offense ranks middle of the pack with a batting average of .240 (16th), on base percentage of .318 (10th), slugging percentage of .3812 (21st) and have scored 646 total runs (14th). The Padres bullpen ranks a bit better with a WHIP of 1.21 (9th) and team ERA of 3.89 (13th). Southpaw pitcher Blake Snell (7-9, 3.85 ERA) is expected to start Wednesday.  

I like the value in the Cardinals moneyline in game two of this series. Neither team has a huge pitching advantage and I think St. Louis’s offense will be the game-changer in this one. Expect a close game throughout and for the Cardinals to sneak a win here.

San Diego’s 29-year-old left-hander earned the win in his last start, which came on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks September 16, 2022. He threw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and seven strikeouts in a 3-12 Padres victory. Snell owns a 3-7 home record this season in 12 starts at PETCO Park. In those outings, he has posted a 4.43 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, 20 walks, and 83 strikeouts in 63 innings of work.
