Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees Betting Analysis

The Yankees host the Orioles at Yankee Stadium for Game first of a three-game series on Friday, September 30, 2022.

The Orioles are placed fourth in the American League East with a record of 80-76 overall and 36-42 on the road, which trails the division leading New York Yankees by 16.5 games. The Yankees are in first place in the American League East with a record of 96-59, highlighted by a sturdy 56-22 record at home.

Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees Betting Prediction

Baltimore is out of contention to win the AL East division but are in the mix for a Wild Card berth as they sit five games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the third spot. It will be no easy task with the only remaining teams on their schedule being New York and Toronto. The Orioles have struggled a bit as of late, losing six of their last 10 games. Baltimore’s offense has been inconsistent this season with a batting average of .238 (20th), on base percentage of .306 (22nd), slugging percentage of .395 (14th) and have scored 662 total runs (19th). The bullpen has also been iffy with a WHIP of 1.29 (18th) and team ERA of 3.98 (18th). The right-hander Jordan Lyles (11-11, 4.45 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday.

The Yankees have clinched the division and are just playing for the love of the game at this point. Aaron Judge recently hit his 61st home run so that pressure is off as well. New York continues to play good baseball and have won eight of their last 10 games. The offense has been great throughout the season with a batting average of .242 (15th), on base percentage of .325 (4th), slugging percentage of .428 (3rd) and have scored 785 total runs (2nd). Their bullpen is one of the best in the league as well with a WHIP of 1.12 (3rd) and team ERA of 3.34 (3rd). Right-handed pitcher Domingo German (2-3, 3.30 ERA) is scheduled to start on Friday.

Although German doesn’t have a ton of action this season, I still expect the Yankees to take game-one of this series. Their lineup is too deep and should be able to do some damage against Lyles. I hate to say it, but it is time for Baltimore to wave the white flag on this season. Backing the Yankees runline here.

Score Prediction: Yankees 5, Orioles 3
Best Bet: Yankees -1.5 (+115)

Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees – Pitching Matchup

Baltimore: Jordan Lyles (11-11, 4.55 ERA)

Baltimore’s right-hander Jordan Lyles takes the mound for his 31st start of the season. Lyles looks to improve on a 11-11 record and 4.55 ERA in 172 innings, while striking out 135, walking 51 batters, and posting a 1.41 WHIP. Lyles didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came on the road against the Boston Red Sox on September 26, 2022. He threw two innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk in an eventual 8-14 the Orioles defeat. Lyles owns a 6-8 road record this season in 17 starts away from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. In those away outings, he has posted a 5.56 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, 29 walks, and 80 strikeouts in 89 innings of work.

New York: Domingo Germán (2-3, 3.30 ERA)

Domingo Germán will make his 12th start of the season for New York, who’s hoping to find some traction after posting a 2-3 record and 3.30 ERA thus far, while tallying a 1.12 WHIP, 15 walks, and 46 strikeouts across 62.2 innings of action. German received a no-decision in his most recent start against the Boston Red Sox, as New York’s right-hander surrendered three runs on three hits, one walk, and five strikeouts during the Yankees’ 7-5 home loss on September 24, 2022. In his six home starts this season, German is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, seven walks and 22 strikeouts over 28 innings of work.
