For the first time in years, the Jets were the hottest ticket in NYC entering Week 1 of the season thanks to the acquisition of four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. But after an offseason with a ludicrous amount of hype, it seemed like New York’s playoff chances instantly vanished when Rodgers went down with a torn Achilles on the very first drive of their season opener, as the Jets went on to lose three of their first four matchups with Zach Wilson under center to fall to 1-3, while averaging just 15.5 points per game during that span.
However, just as we were almost finished digging graves for Wilson and the rest of this year’s New York team, the Jets suddenly flipped the switch and started winning football games. The Jets enter Monday riding a three-game win streak, getting them back over .500 at 4-3, which is primarily due to their defense surrendering just 15 points per game and forcing seven turnovers in matchups against the Eagles, Broncos, and Giants.
That said, the general betting audience isn’t buying the Jets’ recent success, and neither are sharps. According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the spread for this matchup originally hit the market at Chargers -2 at TwinsSpires, and since then, it has climbed all the way to -3.5 at most shops with 56% of spread tickets and 66% of the money coming in on Los Angeles as of Wednesday.
Quite frankly, though, I simply don’t trust Los Angeles to win this game by more than a field goal, and I’m not sure why anybody else does either. The Chargers own a record of 3-4 on the season. Two of those wins came in matchups against garbage football teams in the Bears and Raiders, and the other came against the Vikings, which to be fair, wasn’t a total dumpster fire prior to Kirk Cousins’ injury, but still not an overly inspiring feat.
The Chargers have all the talent in the world, but under head coach Brandon Staley, the kryptonite for this team has been their inability to play complimentary football, which has remained true this season. In two of their losses, the Chargers offense was held to 17 points by the Cowboys and Chiefs, and in the other two, their defense was shredded for 27+ points by the Titans and Dolphins. It seems like L. A. discovers new ways to lose every week, and I just can’t bring myself to back them in a road primetime matchup against an elite defense.
All things considered, the under strikes me as the best play in this contest. The Chargers offense finally got the wheels churning with a 31-point performance in a win over Chicago last week. But prior to that, they were completely shut down in back-to-back matchups against Dallas and Kansas City, and I expect a similar result this week in another tough draw against the Jets’ 8th-ranked defensive unit.
While on the flip side, you can pretty much always count on New York’s offense to underperform with Wilson at QB. The Jets have scored 20 points or less in five of six games started by Wilson this season, and they fell short of 14 points in three of those outings. Give me the under on Monday night.
Score Prediction: Jets 17, Chargers 16
Best Bet: Under 39.5 (-110)

Los Angeles Chargers Betting Analysis
It’s beginning to feel like Groundhog Day in the Chargers wide receiver room. Josh Palmer re-aggravated a knee injury in the Bolts’ win over Chicago last Sunday. So now, Palmer joins fellow wideout Mike Williams on the sidelines for this week’s matchup against New York. And as a result, rookie WR Quentin Johnston is finally expected to receive an opportunity to shine as the No. 2 option behind Keenan Allen this week, who draws a tough matchup against Jets CB Sauce Gardner.
Herbert managed to keep a clean sheet with zero interceptions against the Bears last Sunday. However, that hasn’t exactly been the norm for L. A. as of late. Prior to his latest outing, Herbert threw an INT in three straight games, and he was picked off twice in an ugly loss to Kansas City. Herbert interception props might also be worth a look at plus money.

New York Jets Betting Analysis
The Jets defense deserves the majority of the credit for winning the turnover battle the last few weeks, having forced seven turnovers in the last three games. But to give some credit where it’s due, Zach Wilson has also demonstrated much better ball security in the passing game as of late, considering he’s thrown just one interception in the Jets’ last five games (170 pass attempts).
New York’s defense has been great this season, especially in the passing game and turnover department. The Jets’ secondary ranks 5th in passing yards allowed per game and 4th in yards allowed per attempt. And as a unit, their defense has forced multiple turnovers in four of seven contests, currently ranked 4th in takeaways per game. This is a strength-on-strength matchup for the Jets defense and Chargers offense. We should be in for a relatively low scoring bout.
