Dolphins vs Eagles Picks, Betting Prediction & Odds for Sunday Night Football Week 7

Matchup Spread Total Moneyline

Not only is this a Sunday Night Football matchup between two of the league’s premier one-loss teams with the Eagles and Dolphins both entering this week at 5-1. But this contest also has additional personal stakes for the two QBs, as former college teammates Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa will square off for the first time professionally since their battle for the starting job at the University of Alabama.

According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the SuperBook closed the lookahead line for this contest at Philly -3, but following the Eagles loss to the Jets, that number fell to Philly -2.5 on Sunday night. SuperBook risk advisor Chase Michaelson said, “We think the perception will be that Philly is too good to lose two in a row." However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. As of Wednesday, money was still piling in on the Dolphins, with Miami netting 58% of spread tickets and 62% of spread dollars early in the week.

I must agree with Mr. Michaelson here, though. I think the Eagles are destined to bounce back this week. Since taking the reins at QB for Philly, Hurts has consistently dominated at home and underperformed on the road. So, while ultimately, Philly losing to the Jets may come as a surprise, the notion of Hurts struggling against a good defense in a hostile environment is not something out of the ordinary. According to Action Network’s Evan Abrams, Hurts has posted ATS records of 14-6-1 at home and 9-14 on the road throughout his career, and he’s 14-1 SU as a home favorite. That trend has remained true in primetime as well. In night games, Hurts is 7-1-1 ATS at home and 1-3 ATS on the road.

The Dolphins have posted incredible offensive numbers through the first six weeks of the season, as they enter Sunday ranked 1st in total yardage by more than 100 yards per game at 499 YPG – compared to Philly ranking 2nd at 395 YPG. However, Miami’s raw offensive numbers don’t quite tell the full story, and quite frankly, I think all the hype surrounding the Dolphins high-powered offense is a bit exaggerated.

Miami’s offense was offered little-to-no resistance against the Chargers, Broncos, Giants, and Panthers as they racked up an average of 44.8 points on 553 total yards per game in a quartet of matchups against Bottom 10 defensive units. However, let’s not pretend the Dolphins offense has been totally unstoppable. Miami averaged just 22 points per game in much tougher matchups against New England and Buffalo, which is a number Philly has fallen short of just once this season.

The Eagles defense is banged up, but they still have the far superior unit in this matchup. The Dolphins enter the week ranked 26th in scoring and 20th in total yardage defensively, despite still managing to yield a record of 5-1. In their only matchup against a team with a record above .500 (Buffalo), Miami got smoked by 28 points. I think the Fins are due for some regression. Give me the Birds to bounce back at home on Sunday Night Football.

Miami Dolphins Betting Analysis

The Dolphins defense managed to hold the Panthers, Giants, Broncos and Patriots to 21 points or less. However, they also surrendered 34 to the Chargers and 48 to the Bills. So, which version of this Miami defense is going to show up on Sunday night?

The Eagles offense immediately fell apart after RT Lane Johnson exited with an injury in their 20-14 loss to the Jets last week, which is a frustrating norm for Philly when he is sidelined. However, Johnson has been removed from the injury report ahead of this contest, so the Eagles o-line is back on even ground again.

Prior to last week, the Eagles had scored 25+ points on 400+ total yards in four of five matchups against some tougher defensive units than Miami’s. The Dolphins defense ranks 26th in scoring and 20th in total yardage. I expect them to have a tough time slowing down Philly on Sunday night.

Philadelphia Eagles Betting Analysis

My lone concern with backing the Eagles in this spot is the situational matchup for their defense. Reed Blankenship and Bradley Roby will both be sidelined for Philly’s secondary on Sunday night. That aside, the Eagles defense is primarily predicated on pressuring the opposing QB to take the heat off their secondary. Healthy or not, this matchup was already circled on the calendar as a difficult task against a Dolphins offense that makes a living by setting up Tua for quick dropbacks to deliver the ball early.

That said, Miami’s defense probably won’t be able to stand its ground either. And after turning the ball over four times in a loss to the Jets last week, I expect the Eagles to put a heavy emphasis on ball security and special teams in this week’s performance against Miami. As long as they clean up those two areas, their offense should still be able to get them over the hump if their defense gets torched and this game turns into a shootout.
