The Cowboys are widely regarded as the hottest team in the NFL as they enter Sunday’s contest coming off wins in four straight games while scoring 41-plus points in three of those matchups. Dak Prescott is currently neck-and-neck with Brock Purdy at the top of the MVP odds list, and they are also listed at +400 to win the NFC.

However, for a variety of reasons, I believe Dallas is incredibly overrated at the moment – and on the other side of that same coin, this has the makings of an excellent buy-low spot for Philadelphia.

Not too long ago, the football community seemed genuinely concerned about the future of this Dallas team. The Cowboys got crushed by San Francisco in Week 5 to fall to a record of 3-2 (L, 42-10), and then followed that up with an ugly win over the Chargers in Week 6 (W, 20-17).

But lo and behold, after running up the score on a bunch of below-average defensive units in their last four games (NYG, CAR, WAS, SEA), all of the stat nerds are jumping back on the Cowboys bandwagon – and I guess, who could blame them? They put up 640 yards of total offense against a terrible Giants team. And they scored 40-plus points against WAS and SEA. So Dallas must be the best team in the division now, right?

… Wrong.

Adamant defenders of the Cowboys will argue they can only beat the teams on their schedule. But they still don’t have a win against an opponent above .500 – and the fact of the matter is, Dallas has already played two measuring-stick games against the 49ers and Eagles, and came up short in both of those affairs.

Whereas, Philly has become more battle-tested in the last six weeks than Dallas has all year. The Eagles enter this contest following wins in five of their last six games, and four of those wins came in tough matchups against the Chiefs, Dolphins, Bills, and of course, the Cowboys.

In the first meeting of the year between these teams, the Cowboys went to halftime with a 17-14 lead. But the Eagles came surging back with a touchdown early in the third quarter to move ahead by four, and never looked back on the way to a 28-23 victory.

The total yardage stats heavily favored Dallas in the previous meeting. The Cowboys outgained Philly 406-292 despite the Eagles earning the win in Week 9. However, let the record also show, the Eagles spent a huge chunk of the game milking the clock thanks to Dallas coming up empty handed in the scoring department on four-of-five second half drives.

Call it whatever you want. The Eagles are 24-3 in their last 27 games started by Jalen Hurts. This is a really good football team that knows how to win big games. This game has “letdown” written all over it for Cowboys fans. Give me the Birds on Sunday night.

Philadelphia Eagles Betting Analysis

According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, TwinSpires opened the line for this contest at Cowboys -3, and since then has moved half-a-point to -3.5, despite the Eagles attracting 64% of bets and 59% of money as of Wednesday night.

In theory, if the Cowboys happened to own wins on their resume over the Chiefs, Dolphins and Bills, while also posting such impressive numbers, then maybe I’d be ready to acknowledge Dallas as a title contender. However, strength of schedule is a double edged sword, given that the Eagles have stood toe-to-toe in tough battles (and won) with that group of heavyweights, which has naturally caused their numbers to suffer – and as a result, many people believe their success is fraudulent.

Dallas Cowboys Betting Analysis

If you listen to talk shows or podcasts, you are going to hear a bunch of really impressive stats about Dallas this week. However, make sure to keep in mind that those numbers are hugely inflated by blowouts against bad teams – and quite frankly, putting up big numbers against the Panthers and Giants doesn’t impress me.

Make no mistake about it. Dallas is a good football team, and regardless of the outcome in this matchup, they should still be able to cruise to the top wild card spot in the conference. But I’m not buying into the recent hype declaring imminent title contention. This is the same old Dallas team as years past, almost surely destined to win 12+ games and then get bounced in the first or second round of the playoffs.

Honestly, I’m surprised that the oddsmakers aren’t calling for Dallas to self-destruct. I feel like we’ve seen this scenario play out way too many times already. Even if the Cowboys manage to pull out this enormous win, should they really be favored to do so?
