Matchup Spread Total Moneyline

Last week’s Lions vs. Ravens matchup was supposed to be a measuring stick game that would inherently create some type of narrative surrounding the result of a battle between a pair of fringe-contenders from opposing conferences in mid-season form. Well, forget the measuring stick. The Lions had to break out the 100-foot tape measure in order to calculate how far away they stood from Baltimore in a 32-point blowout loss.

However, the betting community still isn’t ready to sell stock in this Detroit team. According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, PointsBet opened the line for this contest at Lions -7.5 and, even in the wake of a blowout loss, Detroit bettors pushed the line to -9.5 by Monday night with 86% of early tickets and 92% of early cash rolling in on the Lions to bounce back. But following the official injury clearance of Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo, the line retreated to Detroit -7.5, which is where it stands as of Sunday morning.

Personally, I fall somewhere in the middle when it comes to my evaluation of last week’s Lions vs. Ravens blowout. Adamant defenders of this Detroit team claim that it was just a bad spot due to a crowded injury report, and the game got away from them early, so they simply threw in the towel. And while there may be some truth to that sentiment, I’m officially concerned that the Lions defense may hinder their ability to make a deep playoff run.

However, even with a subpar defense, the Lions still stand head-and-shoulders above teams like Las Vegas. Detroit ranked 5th in points scored and 28th in points allowed last season. So, all of the football nerds got super excited when the Lions held Kansas City to 20 points in a win over the Chiefs in the season opener, and then proceeded to hold their opponent to 20 points or less in two of the next three matchups. But it turns out, Detroit’s defense might not be all that great.

Their record may not currently indicate it while standing atop the NFC North standings at 5-2, but truth be told, the Lions are pretty similar to the team that finished 2nd in the division with a record of 9-8 last season: their offense is great (when healthy), and oftentimes, they need to play great in order to win games because their defense can’t be trusted to slow down the big dogs, highlighted by Detroit surrendering 28+ points in matchups against Philly, Minnesota, Seattle, New England, Miami, Buffalo, Chicago, and Carolina last year – and more recently, 37+ points in matchups against Seattle and Baltimore this year.

Fortunately for Detroit in this contest, the Raiders offense is not one of the big dogs, and they are destined to struggle regardless of their QB situation or strength of the opposing defense. Jimmy Garoppolo has started five games this season, and in those games, the Raiders have averaged 16.6 PPG and maxed out at 21 points, while scoring 18 or less in four of those contests. 

Since they currently own a modest record of 3-4, the vast majority of people tend to watch their step when criticizing this Vegas team. But make no mistake about it, the Raiders are one of the worst teams in football, and this week, they draw a matchup against the Lions in primetime, who are hot and bothered coming off a brutal let-down loss, likely seeking a statement win at home under the bright lights. I’m laying the points with Detroit on Monday night.

Las Vegas Raiders Betting Analysis

After throwing just 42 interceptions on 1,632 pass attempts for the 49ers over the last six years (55 starts), Garoppolo has thrown an interception in five straight starts to begin his tenure with the Raiders, while getting picked off multiple times in two of those affairs to accumulate a total of 8 INTs already.

Garoppolo is just five interceptions away from matching his career high INT total of 13 in just five appearances for the Raiders, and he was already averaging 0.76 interceptions per start prior to departing San Francisco. This is a case of Garoppolo desperately needing the guidance of Kyle Shanahan or Bill Belichick in his corner, and I highly doubt Josh McDaniels will be able to fix him. 

The Jimmy G tax has been particularly expensive for reigning NFL rushing champ Josh Jacobs. Jacobs rushed for 97.2 yards per game on 4.9 yards per attempt en route to carving out the best campaign of his career last year. However, those numbers have fallen off a cliff this season. Jacobs enters Week 8 averaging just 49.6 rushing yards per game on 2.9 yards per attempt, while falling short of the 65-yard mark in five of seven contests thus far.

Detroit Lions Betting Analysis

After posting a promising start to the season, Detroit’s defense has fallen off a little bit the last few weeks. The Lions enter Week 8 ranked 19th in scoring at 21.6 points allowed per game. However, they continue to press the issue and take away possessions from their opponents, which has been good enough to get them to 5-2.

That said, the Lions smothered Tampa Bay and Atlanta to six points apiece, which is slightly suppressing their defensive scoring average. In their other five matchups, the Lions defense surrendered an average of 27.8 points on 357 yards per game, while allowing lofty totals of 24 to Carolina, 37 to Seattle, and 38 to Baltimore.

Fortunately for Detroit, everybody’s defense is good enough to slow down a Raiders team that’s scored 21 points or less in seven straight games to open the season.
