Jimmy Garoppolo has posted an incredible record of 41-18 in 59 career starts, which includes a perfect record of 2-0 for New England, 38-17 for San Francisco, and now, 1-1 for Vegas. So, the argument on the Raiders’ behalf could be that their QB is simply a bona fide winner, and if that’s your sincere evaluation of him, the win-loss numbers certainly support that claim at this stage of his career. But personally, I prefer to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

The wide majority of the NFL community has been laser focused on top-tier teams like the Bengals struggling to start the season, and rightfully so. Thanks to Cincy’s jarring performance on offense thus far, plus a handful of other perennial division contenders falling to 0-2 out of the gate, some of the 1-1 teams seem to be flying under the radar when it comes to their terrible offensive numbers through Week 2, and the Steelers and Raiders are prime examples of that.

After getting stomped by a score of 30-7 by the 49ers in Week 1, the Steelers bounced back with an upset victory over Cleveland in Week 2. However, certainly no thanks to Kenny Pickett and company, as the Steelers offense generated just 12 points on 255 total yards and turned the ball over twice in the contest, while their defense managed to get them over the hump with a pair of house calls in a 26-22 victory.

Entering Week 3, the Steelers offense ranks 31st in total yards and 29th in yards per play, only ranking ahead of Cincinnati in the total yardage department. But not too far ahead of Pittsburgh, you’ll find Jimmy G and the Raiders offense, currently ranked 30th in total yardage, as well as 30th in overall scoring, having scored 17 points or less in back-to-back contests to open the season.

According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the Steelers originally opened as 1.5-point road favorites in this contest, but on Wednesday, this line jumped the fence at TwinSpires Sportsbook, now sitting at Raiders -2.5, as the book was taking roughly 57% of the tickets and 74% of the cash on Las Vegas early in the week.

Regarding the total, I expect bettors to be a little bit dubious about the under. In last week’s Browns vs. Steelers Monday night game, under bettors were burned by a pair of defensive scores and a total of six turnovers in a contest that the offensive units combined for just 34 points on 455 total yards.

The total for this matchup is already pretty low, having opened at 44 and then falling to 43 in most markets as of Saturday. However, barring another performance with multiple defensive scores by the Steelers, 20 points should be enough for either side to win this game.

Pittsburgh Steelers Betting Analysis

Personally, I don’t see much value in picking a side in this matchup. The Steelers still strike me as the better team, overall. However, over the last few years, the one saving grace for this Pittsburgh squad has been its defensive dominance. But the Steelers’ D just got shredded for an average of 26 points on 400 yards in their first two games of this season, with a healthy TJ Watt, and their offense looks more stagnant than ever.

That said, my gut is still telling me to back the Steelers in this matchup. It hasn’t quite come to fruition yet, but I believe the Raiders are a Bottom 5 team in the league, and the worst is still yet to come this season; while the Steelers still strike me as a fringe playoff team. However, Pittsburgh’s offense has been absolutely abysmal through the first two weeks of the season, and I just can’t get myself to pull the trigger on the road dog here.

Las Vegas Raiders Betting Analysis

Back in 2016, Jimmy Garoppolo briefly filled in for a world class Patriots team and led Bill Belichick’s squad to a pair of wins before ultimately parting ways for San Francisco, where he found boatloads of success on the way to a 38-19 record as a starter. However, following the revelation of Brock Purdy for the 49ers, plus the general amount of success found by pretty much every quarterback that has stepped into Kyle Shanahan’s system, I still find myself questioning Garoppolo’s overall prowess as an NFL quarterback.

Garoppolo has attempted just 50 passes for the Raiders this season, and he’s already thrown three interceptions. But back in a heavily simplified Shanahan scheme (for QBs, at least), he started 55 games and attempted 1,632 passes, yet he was only picked off 42 times.

Maybe Garoppolo will return to Niners’ form in Week 3. But through just two starts with the Raiders, he’s on pace to nearly double his career-high interception number of 13, currently tracking for 25.5 picks entering this week. So, it’s tough to back Vegas with confidence heading into a matchup against a Steelers defense that’s already forced five turnovers and scored two touchdowns this season.
