Two teams who barely showed anything in the preseason will open the regular season Sunday surrounded by new faces and circumstances. The Eagles have new people in a bunch of key positions including a new coaching staff. The Falcons saw Julio Jones depart to the Titans, while welcoming in a new head coach of their own.

Normally there’s good value in variance, but in the case of the Eagles it’s just way too much to start the year. It’s far easier to bet on a veteran QB in Matt Ryan dealing with a new system, than Jalen Hurts still new to the NFL. This is where the game will be lost for Philadelphia, and value gained in taking the home team only laying a FG.

The Eagles barely had a preseason. It was full of reports from joint practices but saw just 10 snaps from Hurts in the three games. This means the starting offense only got 10 looks before starting the regular season on the road, where it’s never easy in this league. On paper the Eagles pass rush should be able to dominate the Falcons OL, and Philly has some young promising players on offense.

Unlike their opponent, the Eagles weapons are a group of young unproven talent. Calvin Ridley has a resume in the NFL where Devonta Smith hasn’t taken a regular season snap. Jalen Reagor was nonexistent for the most part last year, while Russell Gage steps into a void already familiar with his QB.

The Falcons didn’t run their starters out much in the preseason either, but they return key veterans at both the QB and skill positions. Week 1 in the NFL is the only time carryover from last year matters. In this case it’s the main factor that separates these two teams, by a wide margin.

This is a rare scenario where the Eagles step into a game with a new HC, OC, DC, ST coach and some key skill players. Even Hurts is set to start his first full season, adding a completely different offense than last year. Throw everything out from last year with the Eagles as it’s simply too difficult to carry much over to this year. The one exception would be Philadelphia finishing 23rd last year in stopping the run, something Mike Davis can benefit from the most.
