The Chargers have become notorious for their inconsistency over the last few seasons, but San Francisco tends to fall under that same umbrella, as the Niners followed up last year’s impressive playoff run with an underwhelming 4-4 start to the season, which includes head-scratching losses to the Bears, Broncos, and Falcons.

The Chargers never make anything look easy, and they’re still dealing with an array of health issues. But putting those things aside, L. A. enters Sunday night’s matchup riding a solid 4-1 stretch, which includes wins over the Broncos and Falcons, both teams that San Francisco already lost to this season.

This matchup has ugly written all over it, and L. A. certainly knows how to win ugly football games. I very rarely trust Brandon Staley’s squad with my money these days, but as heavy underdogs against a .500 Niners team quarterbacked by Jimmy Garoppolo, it’s tough to resist taking a flier on the Bolts ML here.

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Typically, I avoid the Chargers like the plague. However, they are usually offered at a much different price point, as Sunday night’s matchup marks just the third time L. A. has been tagged as an underdog of 3.5+ PTS since the beginning of last season, and the two times that they were doubted on that level prior to this contest both came in road matchups against Kansas City.

It’s not exactly an ideal spot for the Chargers, as San Francisco’s defense appears to get better every week, and Justin Herbert has seen his fair share of struggles in the absence of his top two receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.

However, the Chargers keep squeaking out victories, and somehow, they’ve now strung together wins in four of their last five games. And while the oddsmakers seem to think L. A.’s run will come to an abrupt halt on Sunday night, I’d rather take a flier on the Bolts as heavy underdogs to escape with another victory here. They don’t get offered at this price point often.

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS BETTING ANALYSIS

The Niners stumbled out to a slow start with Trey Lance under center, as San Francisco scored just 10 points on 331 total yards in a wild slip-and-slide game against Chicago in Week 1 (L, 19-10), which was followed by another weak performance out of the gate against Seattle in Week 2, as 21 of the Niners’ 27 points came after Garoppolo’s entry in the first half.

The Niners defense absolutely dominated in their first five weeks of the season, as San Francisco allowed just 12.2 PPG on 249 YPG across an impressive 3-2 start. However, they’ve appeared a bit vulnerable since that stretch, highlighted by the Niners entering Sunday having surrendered 28+ PTS in two of their last three contests (28.7 PPG), making it very difficult for Garoppolo and co. to keep up.
