In the days leading up to last Sunday, the Titans appeared to be down for the count and slowly beginning to realign their focus on the future, as they entered Week 8 with a record of 2-4 and their starting QB sidelined with an ankle injury, resulting in the departure of All-Pro safety Kevin Byard prior to the trade deadline, along with head coach Mike Vrabel committing to the utilization of a two-QB platoon ahead of last week’s matchup against Atlanta.
However, with Tennessee’s playoff hopes quickly slipping away, a glimmer of hope suddenly arrived in the form of rookie QB Will Levis last week, as Levis torched the Falcons for 238 passing yards and four touchdown passes (0 INTs) on the way to a 28-23 victory – which was a stunning turn of events after seeing Ryan Tannehill throw just two touchdown passes in six starts for the Titans this season.
According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the SuperBook closed the lookahead line for this contest at Steelers -4. But in the aftermath of a stellar performance by Levis, as well as a minor rib injury suffered by Steelers QB Kenny Pickett in a 20-10 loss to Jacksonville, the market officially reopened at Steelers -3 on Sunday night, and since then has fallen to -2.5 at most shops, despite Pickett indicating that he intends to play on Thursday night.
With or without Pickett, though, I think we are destined to see Pittsburgh bounce back at home on Thursday night. According to Action Network’s Evan Abrams, the Steelers are 14-10-1 SU and ATS in matchups started by a backup QB over the last decade. And all things considered, Pittsburgh’s offense didn’t look all that different during Mitch Trubisky’s brief tenure as the starter last year. The Steelers managed to generate 20+ points in three of five games started by Trubisky in 2022, which is a clip they’ve fallen short of in four of seven contests on the way to a record of 4-3 this season.
Per usual, there’s nothing flashy about this Steelers team, currently ranked 29th in points scored and 18th in points allowed on the season. However, I’m well beyond the point of accepting the fact that their consistent success in the win column is no fluke, despite what the underlying metrics may suggest. Under head coach Mike Tomlin, the Steelers are 33-18-4 ATS when tagged as a favorite of three points or less (or underdog) at home, and they are 16-6 SU in their last 22 night games – which has remained true with Pickett. The Steelers are 5-1 SU and 6-0 ATS in primetime matchups started by their second-year QB.
Maybe Will Levis is the real deal, and we’ll all look back on this matchup and reminisce about how big of a steal Tennessee +2.5 was in this spot. However, prior to last week’s breakout performance, Levis instilled such little confidence in the mind of his head coach that Vrabel entered the week planning to have him split snaps with Malik Willis, who has been atrocious in three starts for the Titans, completing just 51% of his passes for 78 yards per game to go along with zero touchdowns and three interceptions.
Levis looked spectacular on the highlight reel in his NFL debut last week as he connected for a trio of 33+ yard touchdown passes to multiple different wide open receivers streaking down field. However, if you take away those three long touchdowns, it was a relatively pedestrian performance, considering he completed 16 of 26 pass attempts for just 97 yards and a TD aside from the deep shots that found the endzone.
The Steelers are primed to do what they do best in this spot: win ugly, low-scoring football games. So, I’m laying the short number with Pittsburgh in what has the makings of an ugly AFC clash on Thursday night.

Tennessee Titans Betting Analysis
Over the last few years, Tennessee and Pittsburgh have both shown a tendency to thrive in ugly low-scoring affairs, which has remained true for the Steelers, considering Pittsburgh won two of its last three games despite averaging just 17 PPG during that span. However, the Titans can no longer rely on their defense to single-handedly carry them to wins. The Titans have allowed 23+ points in five of their last six games, and that’s an enormous ask on a consistent basis for an offense that’s scored 16 points or less in four of seven matchups this season.

Pittsburgh Steelers Betting Analysis
The Steelers offense certainly isn’t anything to write home about. But you can take comfort in the fact that their defense has held its opponent to 20 points or less in four of the last five games, and prior to last week, the Titans had scored 16 points or less in three of their last four outings. That said, my main concern with backing Pittsburgh in this spot is the fact that I’m electing to lay points with a Steelers team that has fallen short of the 20-point scoring mark in three of their last four games. But I expect their defense to pull through in a big way at home against the Titans 23rd ranked scoring offense with a rookie QB making his first career start in primetime on a short week.
