Top 25 Betting Recap
Editor's Note: Don't miss out on 30 days of Winning College Hoops Picks from Joe Williams for the 2017-18 NCAABK regular season. Click to win! Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.
Tennessee (9-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) is likely to fall out of the Top 25 after dropping their second straight game, a 94-84 decision at home against Auburn (13-1 SU, 8-4 ATS) on Tuesday. The win is likely to make the Tigers fans feeling a little bit better after their football team laid an egg in the Peach Bowl on New Year's Day against UCF. The Tigers have won 13 of 14 games so far this season, but their resume hadn't really had any notable wins until their road win in Knoxville. Keep an eye on the Tigers, as they're also 4-0 on the 'over' in their past four outings. As far as the Vols are concerned, they're 2-4 ATS over the past six outings, including 0-4 ATS in their past four home contests.
Arkansas (11-3 SU, 9-5 ATS) made their debut in the Top 25 this week, and it's likely to be a short stay. They suffered a 78-75 loss against Mississippi State (13-1 SU, 3-6 ATS) in Starkville. Like Auburn above, Mississippi State is likely to join the Top 25, perhaps taking the spot of Arkansas, after their first signature win of the season. The only other opponent the Bulldogs played in the current Top 25 is Cincinnati, and they lost that game 65-50 back on Dec. 12 as 13-point underdogs. The Bulldogs entered Tuesday's game 1-4 ATS over their past five, and 2-6 ATS overall.
Xavier (15-1 SU, 12-4 ATS) avoided the upset, topping Butler (12-4 SU, 8-7 ATS) by an 86-79 score. The Bulldogs were coming off an upset over the weekend of previous No. 1 Villanova (13-1 SU, 10-4 ATS), and were unable to knock off their second straight Top 5 opponent. The Musketeers have won 10 consecutive games dating back to their only loss on Nov. 24 against Arizona State (12-1 SU, 10-2-1 ATS) back on Nov. 24. XU has just been so-so against the number, however, going 3-3 ATS over their past six outings. Xavier is also 4-1 ATS in their past five true road games or neutral-site contests.
The only setback for Michigan State (14-1 SU, 10-5 ATS) is a loss to Duke (13-1 SU, 8-4 ATS) back on Nov. 14 in their second outing of the season. Not only has Sparty rattled off 13 consecutive wins, but they're an impressive 9-3 ATS over the past 12 outings. The 'over' has cashed in four of their past five outings, too, and they're 6-1 ATS in the past seven games at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. They'll host Maryland (13-3 SU, 8-4 ATS) on Thursday night before hitting the road for Ohio State (11-4 SU, 5-8 ATS) on Saturday.
Arizona (11-3 SU, 5-7-2 ATS) is looking to build upon its victory against Arizona State (12-1 SU, 10-2-1 ATS) last time out. The Wildcats pushed against the number in their 84-78 victory on Saturday. So far this season they have covered in back-to-back games just once Dec. 16-18 at New Mexico and vs. North Dakota State. While they've been a bit inconsistent against the number this season, total bettors like them for the 'under' lately. The under is 4-0 in their past three outings, and 4-1 over their past five games at home.
