Sunday's Tip Sheet
The first Sunday of the New Year offers a full slate of college basketball betting action highlighted by a trio of night games featuring some of the best teams in the ACC, American Athletic and Pac-12 conferences. Everything gets underway at 6 p.m. (ET) with the first of two matchups on ESPNU.
No. 24 Florida State Seminoles at No. 15 Miami Hurricanes (ESPNU, 6 p.m. ET)
Opening Odds: Miami -3.5
Betting Matchup
Florida State kicked off play in the ACC with a tight 100-93 loss to Duke on Dec. 30 as an 11 ½-point road underdog and it earned a PUSH in Wednesday’s big 81-80 victory at home against North Carolina as a one-point favorite. This will be the Seminoles third-straight game against a ranked opponent in conference play with Louisville next up on the slate. They are 12-2 straight-up on the year with a 9-2-1 record against the spread. Florida has covered in its first three road games this year.
The Hurricanes made their way up the national polls with a SU 12-1 run through their first 13 games including a 67-53 victory against Pittsburgh in their ACC opener as 12 ½-point road favorites to close out the year. However, things did not go their way on Wednesday night in a stunning 64-54 loss to unranked Georgia Tech as five-point road favorites. Miami (7-5 ATS) had no answer for the Yellow Jackets’ Josh Okogie, who burned its vaunted defense for 30 points.

SMU Mustangs at No. 19 Cincinnati Bearcats (ESPN2, 6 p.m. ET)

Betting Matchup
SMU knocked off Central Florida and South Florida at home to begin AAC play as part of a straight-up five-game winning streak to close out 2017, but in its first game of the New Year on Thursday night it came up short in a 73-70 road loss to Tulane as nine-point favorites. The Mustangs are now 12-4 SU with an even 5-5-1 record against the spread. The total has gone OVER in three of their last five games. This was the just the second time SMU allowed more than 69 points this season.
Cincinnati has established itself as the early frontrunner in the AAC along with Wichita State at 13-2 SU and it opened conference play with victories against Memphis at home and Temple on the road. The Bearcats had their hands full with the Owls in Thursday’s 55-53 squeaker with Jacob Evans III hitting the game winner with less than a second to play. Cincinnati failed to cover as a 7 ½-point favorite against Temple to fall to an even 7-7 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in nine of those 14 games.

No. 4 Arizona State Sun Devils at Utah Utes (ESPNU, 8 p.m. ET)

Betting Matchup
Arizona State’s perfect 12-0 SU run through nonconference play while going a profitable 9-2-1 ATS has been severely tainted with back-to-back road losses to Arizona and Colorado to begin play in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils closed as six-point underdogs in an 84-78 loss to the rival Wildcats in a PUSH and they went on to lose to the Rams on Thursday night by nine points in overtime as nine-point favorites. Arizona State is the sixth-highest scoring team in the nation with 90.0 points per game, but it is allowing an average of 73.9 points on defense.
Utah (10-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) started conference play with back-to-back road victories against Oregon as a 9 ½-point underdog and Oregon State in a game that closed as a PICK. On Thursday night at home, the Utes had no answer for Arizona in a 94-82 loss as 3 ½-point underdogs. The total went OVER 142 points in that game after staying UNDER in their previous five outings. Utah runs five deep in players putting up at least 10 points a game as part of its 76.1-point scoring average.
