Seton Hall Pirates vs. Michigan Wolverines Predictions

The Big East’s Pirates are off to a 2-0 start (straight-up and against the spread) in games they were expected to win as heavy double-digit favorites. Tuesday night’s matchup will be a major step up in class for a team that started last season with three SU losses in its first four games.

Michigan started the new season as the highest-ranked team in the Big Ten. The Wolverines have yet to be tested in their 2-0 SU start, although they did fail to cover a double-digit spread in one of those games.

While I do believe the Pirates can keep things interesting for longer than expected, the gap in talent between these two teams is just too wide to overcome. Michigan is a legitimate contender to win a national championship this season and these are the type of games that tend to prove the point.

Seton Hall Pirates Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-0
  • ATS: 2-0
  • O/U: 0-2

The Pirates rolled over Fairleigh Dickinson 93-49 in their season opener as 26.5-point favorites. This past Sunday, they posted a second romp by beating Yale 80-44 to cover the 11.5-point line. The total stayed UNDER in each contest despite Seton Hall’s combined 173 points.

Putting the level of competition aside, Seton Hall played as about as good as it gets in those two wins as a testament to early season form. If the Pirates bring their A-Game to Ann Harbor for the full 40 minutes, things could stay interesting the entire game.

Seton Hall has four players averaging more than nine points through these first two games. Guard Myles Cale and forward Tyrese Samuel have each averaged 13 points per game. Cale also leads the team in steals with six. Guard Jared Rhoden has pulled down a total of 20 rebounds.

The Pirates have shot 47.7% from the field and 43.8% from three-point range. They have also done an excellent job rebounding the ball with an average of 50 through those two wins. The lone issue is a 69.8 completion percentage from the free throw line.

Michigan Wolverines Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-0
  • ATS: 1-1
  • O/U: 1-1

Facing Buffalo in their season opener, the Wolverines failed to cover a 12.5-point spread in the 88-76 win, but the outcome was never in question. Michigan opened up a 21-point lead in the first half and backed off the gas over the course of the second.

On Saturday against Prairie View A&M, the Wolverines rolled to a 77-49 to cover the closing 23.5-point spread. The total stayed UNDER 145.5 points in that game after going OVER 153.5 points in the opener.

Michigan has gotten a strong effort from center Hunter Dickinson as the centerpiece of this team. He scored a combined 39 points with 16 rebounds in those first two wins. Three more Wolverines are averaging at least 12 PPG while shooting better than 50% from the field.

Overall, the team shot 50% from the field and 36.4% from three point range in those games. Michigan has also pulled down a combined 91 rebounds to go with the 165 points scored. This is another team struggling at the free throw line at 56.5%.

Michigan has covered the spread in 11 of its last 16 home games. (AP)

Seton Hall Pirates vs. Michigan Wolverines Betting Conclusion

Seton Hall should be a highly competitive team in the Big East this season. However, it will be a bit out of its league on Tuesday night. The Pirates have enough talent in the starting five to possibly even cover in the first half, but they will get worn down by the time the final buzzer sounds.

The Wolverines will know they were in a real game when that buzzer sounds as opposed to another brisk workout. However, they will not make the mistake of taking this game too lightly. This will be the first meeting between these two teams.

Seton Hall has covered in its last six November games but they are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games played. The Pirates are 4-1 ATS in their last five games against the Big Ten. The total has stayed UNDER in Michigan’s last five games against a team from the Big East.

With a SU 15-1 record in their last 16 home games, the Wolverines are a solid play on the money line but at a price. They should be able to cover as well for a much more manageable wager.
