BYU Cougars vs. Creighton Bluejays Predictions

The Bluejays will be facing a second straight ranked opponent, and they'll be catching an angry foe, too. The Cougars were tripped up at Utah Valley in overtime on Dec. 1, but have rebounded with solid wins over Missouri State and Utah State after that wake-up call in Orem. It's been a nice response for BYU after losing F-C Gavin Baxter to a season-ending injury in that loss to the Wolverines.

Creighton came up just short against Iowa State in Omaha on Saturday, falling 64-58. The Bluejays have experienced heartbreak in losses to Colorado State and I-State so far, but they also have a solid win at Nebraska, as well as two double-digit wins over Brown and North Dakota State, a pair of above average mid-major squads.

BYU Cougars Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 8-1
  • ATS: 5-3
  • O/U: 4-4

The Cougars are searching for a third consecutive cover, something BYU hasn't done since Jan. 14-21, 2021 in conference play. It hasn't had three straight covers in non-conference play since a 4-0 ATS run from Dec. 7-21, 2019.

BYU will now have to play small-ball center, leaning upon Caleb Lohner and Foussenyi Traore to help fill in, while true freshman Atiki Ally Atiki gets up to speed. Starting center Richard Harward will be back at some point from a knee injury of his own, but there are no signs that will happen anytime soon. Lohner had five points and four boards in 26 minutes vs. USU, while Traore erupted for 14 points and four boards in his 17 minutes.

The Cougars have covered five of the past six games against winning teams, and they're 5-2 ATS in the past seven games overall. As far as the total, the OVER is 4-1 in the past five games overall, but the UNDER is 7-2 across their past nine neutral-site appearances.

Creighton Bluejays Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 7-2
  • ATS: 3-6
  • O/U: 3-6

Creighton was held to just 58 points last time out in a loss at home against Iowa State, losing straight-up as a 5.5-point favorite. The Bluejays have had some success as an underdog this season, going 1-1 SU/ATS, with the road win at Nebraska coming as a three-point 'dog on Nov. 16.

The Bluejays fell to the Cyclones, but Ryan Hawkins isn't to blame. He accounted for 25 points, or 43.1% of the team's offensive production, while Ryan Nembhard chipped in with 10 points. Hawkins was 8-of-11 from the floor, while the rest of the team shot just 32.4%, or 11-of-34, including 3-of-14 from behind the arc.

The Bluejays are looking to turn around some ugly trends. Creighton is just 1-4 ATS in the past five games overall, 1-6 ATS in the past seven after a straight-up loss and 2-5 ATS in the past seven neutral-site games.

BYU Cougars vs. Creighton Bluejays Betting Conclusion

The Bluejays are coming off a sub-60-point performance last time out against Iowa State in a loss, while the Cougars are trying to do it with mirrors in the paint, using a cadre of players to mix and match while the top two centers on the depth chart are on the shelf.

Creighton should be able to take advantage down low of the inexperience and lack of size in the paint, particularly with Hawkins. He was a one-man wrecking crew against Iowa State, and the only guy who got the memo there was a game that night. Creighton has four players averaging double-digit points and 3.7 or more rebounds per outing. I like their depth, and I think they are able to get it done in South Dakota against BYU, but don't expect a lot of points.
