TEXAS LONGHORNS VS. TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS PREDICTIONS

Texas returns to Big 12 play after beating the SEC’s Tennessee Volunteers by one point on Saturday as a four-point home favorite. The Longhorns are 5-3 straight-up in conference play. With road losses to Oklahoma State and Iowa State along with a loss at home to Kansas State, Texas has yet to play one of the top contenders for the Big 12 regular season title this season.

Texas Tech is also 5-3 SU through its first eight conference games. It just beat Mississippi State by 16 points in Saturday’s Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Red Raiders posted earlier wins against Kansas at home and Baylor on the road as part of their conference resume. They went on to lose the second meeting against the Jayhawks by three points on Jan. 24 as 7.5-point road underdogs.

This will be the first of two meetings in the regular season with the series moving to Texas later in February. Texas Tech has won three of the last five meetings both SU and against the spread and I like the Red Raiders’ chances to cover the 4.5 points at home this Tuesday night in what should remain a close battle all game long.

TEXAS LONGHORNS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 16-5
  • ATS: 9-12
  • O/U: 8-13

My main concern for Tuesday night as far as the current spread is the Longhorns’ 2-5 record ATS over their last seven games while going 4-3 SU. They have struggled with consistency against teams they were favored to beat. I question how they will hold up as road underdogs in this game. The total has stayed UNDER in four of those last seven games.

Forward Timmy Allen leads a group of four players averaging at least 10 points per game. Allen tops the list in both points (11.8) and rebounds (6.5). He is also averaging 1.3 steals a game. Guard Marcus Carr is next on that list with 10.6 PPG and he is followed closely by guard Andrew Jones. Carr leads Texas in assists (3.3) and Jones is shooting 42.3% from the field and 84.6% from the free throw line.

The fourth player on that scoring list is Courtney Ramey with 9.8 PPG. He is one of the team’s most accurate shooters at 44% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. Texas, as a team is scoring an average of 68.7 PPG.

The Longhorns are shooting 46% from the field and 33.5% from outside the three-point line. They have connected on 75.9% of their shots from the foul line this season. Texas is averaging 33.9 rebounds and holding opposing teams to just 54.5 points a game on defense.

TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 16-5
  • ATS: 14-7
  • O/U: 10-11

Going back to four-point loss to Iowa State on Jan. 5 as five-point road underdogs, the Red Raiders have gone 8-1 ATS over those nine outings. This includes eight conference games and the recent win against Mississippi State. The total stayed UNDER 133 points in Saturday’s 75- 50 victory after going OVER in four of their last five Big 12 matchups.

Forward Bryson Williams leads Texas Tech in scoring with 13.5 PPG. He is shooting 54.4% from the field and 46% from three-point range. Williams has helped to fill the void left by guard Terrance Shannon Jr. (12 points). He remains questionable for Tuesday’s game with a bad back.

Guard Kevin McCullar is another key player in this lineup with 10.5 points and a team-high 5.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists a game. Forward Kevin Obanor is adding 10.4 PPG while shooting 47.1% from the field. His shooting percentage outside the three-point line falls to 31% on a team-high 87 attempts.

The Red Raiders are scoring an average of 74.8 PPG while connecting on 47.6% of their shots from the field and 32.2% of their three-point attempts. They are averaging 37.6 rebounds a game with a points allowed average of 60.3.

Texas Tech has covered the spread in 10 of its last 13 games. (AP)

TEXAS LONGHORNS VS. TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS BETTING CONCLUSION

Texas Tech has the 5-2 edge ATS over the last seven meetings to complement that current 8-1 run ATS in its last nine games overall.

This will not be a slam dunk by any measure, but I do see the Red Raiders stretching out the margin of victory by more than the current spread.
