SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS VS. COLORADO STATE RAMS PREDICTIONS

Heading into February, San Diego State is 4-2 straight-up in the Mountain West as part of a 12- 5 record overall. After losing to Utah State on the road by 18 points as slight one-point favorites, the Aztecs rolled over New Mexico on Monday night by 25 points as 14.5-point favorites at home. Their other loss in conference play came against Boise State as 4.5-point home favorites.

The Rams have lost their last two games SU as favorites to fall to 6-3 SU in conference play. They lost to UNLV by 14 points on Jan. 28 closing as 14.5-point favorites at home. This past Monday, they came up short in a six-point road loss to Wyoming as 1.5-point favorites. Prior to this slide, Colorado State’s only other loss this season was against the Aztecs in early January.

The Rams were blown out in the first meeting 79-49 as 2.5-point road underdogs. The revenge factor for Friday night is sure to be high in front of the hometown fans. Neither team has played with a high level of consistently lately, so my natural lean in a heated rivalry is towards the home team. However, I am much more confident betting the UNDER on the total line.

SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 12-5
  • ATS: 9-8
  • O/U: 5-12

The Aztecs have matched their 4-2 SU conference record against the closing spread through their first six games. The total has stayed UNDER in four of those six games behind a low scoring offensive effort and defensive effort that is one of the best in nation. This always sets the stage for betting the UNDER in any San Diego State game.

Guard Matt Bradley is the only player in double figures with 16 points per game. He is also San Diego State’s top shooter, hitting 45.2% of his shots from the field. Guard Lamont Butler is next on the list with 9.3 points a game. His main contribution is a 41.9 shooting percentage from three-point range.

Forward Nathan Mensah (7.5 points) is the team’s leading rebounder with 7.2 a game. Guard Trey Pulliam is adding 8.6 points along with a team-high 3.5 assists. The only injury concern for Friday night is forward Aguek Arop with bruised hip. He tops the list in steals with 1.3.

This all adds up to a team scoring average of 64.6 PPG while shooting 42.5% from the field and 33.4% from three-point range. The Aztecs are shooting 66.4% from the free throw line. Under the boards, San Diego State has averaged 36.1 rebounds a game. As mentioned, this team’s strong suit has been on defense with a points-allowed average of 56.8.

COLORADO STATE RAMS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 16-3
  • ATS: 9-9
  • O/U: 7-11

There has to be some concern with those two back-to-back losses, especially the no-show against UNLV at home as heavy favorites. The Rams have not been the best bet in the MWC at 3-6 ATS in those nine games. The total has been a much more consistent play by staying UNDER six times.

Colorado State is a much more dynamic team on offense with an average of 78.3 PPG, but it will probably have to grind things out to come away with a win on Friday night. Guards’ David Roddy (18.6 points) and Isaiah Stevens (16.3 points) have accounted for much of the scoring this season.

Roddy also leads the team in rebounds with 7.7 while shooting 56.9% from the field and 48.2% from three-point range. Stevens leads in assists (5.1) and he is connecting on 48.3% of his shots from the field and 39% of this three-point attempts.

Overall, the Rams’ field goal percentage this season is 49.6% and they are shooting 37.9% from three-point range and 78.9% from the free throw line. Colorado State is averaging 33 rebounds a game and holding opposing teams to 67.7 PPG.

San Diego State is 6-2 ATS in their last eight matchups against Colorado State. (AP)
