WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS VS. OREGON DUCKS PREDICTIONS

The Washington State Cougars lost at home on Saturday night to the Arizona Sundevils 55-58. The Cougars shot a season low 30 FG%, but did manage to force a season high of 19 turnovers and made 10 three pointers, making it the 11th time this season they’ve made double digit shots from beyond the arc. Washington State is now on a two-game losing streak and will begin the first of a three-game road trip when they face Oregon.

The Oregon Ducks lost as 14.5-point home favorites on Saturday to the California Golden Bears 78-64. Prior to the loss, the Ducks were on a four-game winning streak and had won 10 of their last 11. Oregon did not look like themselves, missing 16 straight three-point attempts as well as allowing the Golden Bears to go on a 24-0 run at one point. Following this game, three of the Ducks remaining five opponents are top-25 teams (Arizona, UCLA, USC).

The first meeting between these two teams was scheduled for January 20th but was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. This is a big game for both teams hoping to squeeze into the NCAA tournament. With top-25 opponents remaining on the schedule they each will have a chance to build their resume, but a loss here will more than likely take either team out of the conversation. I like the Ducks to win plus cover in this one, but a close game throughout.

WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 14-9
  • ATS: 10-13
  • O/U: 7-15-1

Washington State has been a disappointment to bettors backing the Cougars with a 10-13 ATS record. They have been better covering on the road going 4-2 ATS. An important stat to note is that Washington State has only lost one game by more than five points to a Pac-12 opponent. The total has gone over just seven times for the Cougars and has gone under in 12 of their last 14.

Washington State’s offense is led by senior guard Michael Flowers who is averaging 13.5 PPG, 3.4 RPG, and 3 APG. As a team the Cougars are averaging 71.8 PPG (162nd), 10.7 APG (320th), 41.7 FG% (291st), 33.8 3PT% (179th), and 37.2 RPG (85th). This is a team that thrives off its defense, so avoiding unnecessary turnovers and not falling behind early is key to their success. Aside from Flowers, sophomore forward Efe Abogidi has come up big for the Cougars, averaging 7.6 PPG, 5.8 RPG, and 1.6 BPG.

Most of the Cougars wins this year have come thanks to great defensive performances. On the season they are allowing 62.5 PPG (27th), 40.3 FG% (36th), 30.9 3PT% (62nd), while averaging 6.7 SPG (166th), and 4.4 BPG (63rd). This is a very good defense that should be able to slow the Ducks offense down enough to give them a chance, the result will simply come down to how the offense plays.

OREGON DUCKS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 16-8
  • ATS: 9-14
  • O/U: 14-9

The Oregon Ducks have not been a profitable team this season with a 9-15 ATS record. Even at home they have not been able to cover, going 6-8 ATS. They are just 2-4 ATS in their last six games. The total has gone over 14 times this season for the Ducks including 13 of their last 18 matchups. Going against this trend, the total has gone under in five of the last six meetings against Washington State.

Oregon’s offense has looked explosive in some games this season including back-to-back wins against UCLA and USC. The Ducks are averaging 73.2 PPG (129th), 12 APG (251st), 46.3 FG% (64th), 35 3PT% (116th), and 34.3 RPG (243rd). The offense is led by senior guard Will Richardson who is averaging 15.4 PPG, 3.3 RPG, and 3.5 APG. Oregon will look to bounce back in this one after a disappointing offense performance against Cal. They will need to do a better job of capitalizing off steals and turnovers as well as not miss 16 straight three-point attempts.

The Ducks defense have had a few slip ups this year, but have looked solid for the most part. Oregon’s defense is allowing 67.2 PPG (124th), 42.9 FG% (181st), 31.4 3PT% (87th), while averaging 7 SPG (140th), and 2.9 BPG (207th). The Ducks cannot have a repeat of their game against Cal and allow Washington State to go on a big run. With such a tough schedule remaining, Oregon will want all the momentum they can get headed into the final stretch of the season.

Oregon is 15-4 in its last 19 matchups against Washington State. (AP)

WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS VS. OREGON DUCKS BETTING CONCLUSION

I give Oregon the edge in this one because I do not see them losing back-to-back home games. They should have a much better performance than they did against Cal which should be enough for a win and cover. While Washington States defense has been fantastic, the offense has yet to prove it can win against top Pac-12 teams. Locking the Ducks in at –3.5.
