Troy Kotsur Oscars Odds Shorten Following SAG Win

The Power of the Dog is seen as the frontrunner to win Best Picture at the 2022 Academy Awards. This movie is expected to win multiple Oscars at the end of the month, and Kodi Smit-McPhee is the odds-on favorite to win his first Oscar for his role in the movie. However, Smit-McPhee’s odds to win Best Supporting Actor have dropped after Troy Kotsur won the award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last week.

2022 Academy Awards Best Supporting Actor Odds

  • Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) -175
  • Troy Kotsur (CODA) +130
  • Ciaran Hinds (Belfast) +850
  • Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog) +2100
  • J.K. Simmons (Being the Ricardos) +2800

Kodi Smit-McPhee won Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globe Awards in early January, and he is still the actor to beat for this award although he was unable to win at the SAG Awards. The Power of the Dog is prime Oscar bait, and Smit-McPhee was particularly moving in his role as Peter Gordon. His loss at the SAG Awards has led to his odds dropping, and this is a good opportunity to get the probable winner at a reduced price.

More people are looking at CODA as a potential upset pick for Best Picture. CODA’s odds to win Best Picture have dropped from 20-1 to 10-1 in the past week, and Troy Kotsur's odds to win Best Supporting Actor moved from 3-1 to +130 after his victory at the SAG Awards over the weekend. CODA has a real chance to win Best Picture, and Kotsur could win Best Supporting Actor, but he is not a good wager at these odds.

Ciaran Hinds was not a nominee for Best Supporting Actor at the SAG Awards, so it’s best to pass on him at this price although he doesn’t have to compete with Belfast co-star Jamie Dornan like he did at the Golden Globe Awards. Jesse Plemons and J.K. Simmons were not nominees for Best Supporting Actor at the SAG Awards or the Golden Globes, so it’s not a good idea to wager on either actor despite the tempting odds.
