Ready for a new week of baseball action with an MLB Same Game Parlay that pays out +490?  Follow along as MLB betting expert Nick Galaida breaks down his SGP picks for Monday, July 21.

On Monday, Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates will host the Detroit Tigers to begin a 3-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET from PNC Park.

As always, it is worth noting that straight wagers are a far more profitable long-term betting strategy than parlays. Still, parlays can be a fun way to add some extra action to a game and make things more interesting.

Paul Skenes OVER 6.5 Strikeouts (-115)

In Paul Skenes’ last four starts prior to the All-Star break, he had been kept at 78 pitches or fewer in each outing, never being allowed to work into the 6th inning. Even still, he had 5+ strikeouts in 3 of those outings, two starts with 6+ strikeouts, and one start with 10 punchouts. Today, pitching at home after an extended break between outings, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Skenes have a slightly longer leash. He gets a great matchup today against a Detroit lineup that has the 3rd-highest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching during the last 14 days. This is a playable number.

Paul Skenes OVER 15.5 Outs Recorded (+135)

Back in February, Paul Skenes told the media, “I’m ready for a large volume and large workload this year.” Obviously, that is in direct contradiction to recent comments coming from Pittsburgh’s front office about Skenes being limited down the stretch this season. The thing is – being “limited” can mean so many different things. Will his innings be closely monitored? Is there a specific pitch count that Skenes will be kept under every five days? Will Skenes even be pitching every 5 days, or will they start building in an extra day of rest for him? Skenes still has a very realistic chance at winning National League Cy Young honors in 2025, and his bullpen could certainly use a little bit of length today after being heavily used over the weekend.

Pittsburgh Pirates ML (-132)

This season, there have been 11 instances of the road team from Sunday Night Baseball playing in a new city the following day. Those teams are 2-9 SU, and 0-9 SU if we excluded the Dodgers from the sample. The public is understandably not eager to bet on the Pirates in this spot, after getting swept this past weekend by the White Sox, but they should have a better-than-normal chance to come away with a win on Monday.

UNDER 4.5 - First 5 Innings (-220)

If Pittsburgh has any chance to win tonight, it’s probably because it’s a relatively low-scoring affair. Entering play, the Pirates’ offense ranks 29th in wRC+, 29th in OPS, and 28th in ISO against right-handed pitching across the last 14 days of action. Paul Skenes leads all of baseball in ERA this season, so it’s the expectation that he can limit the damage done against him in the early going. Runs could be at a premium early in this contest.
