New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox Betting Prediction

New York enters this matchup first in the AL East standings with a 14.0 game lead over the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees most recently went 1-1 SU against the Pittsburgh Pirates and have won seven of their last 10 games. New York is having themselves quite the season on both sides of the ball. They currently rank first in runs per game (5.0), fourth in slugging percentage (.431), first in team ERA (2.93), and the top WHIP in the league (1.07). Unless health becomes an issue for the Yankees, this is a team in great position to make a run in the playoffs. New York’s ACE Gerrit Cole (7-2, 2.99 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Yankees on Thursday.

The Red Sox are currently second in the AL East standings, 14.0 games behind the New York Yankees for first place. Boston went 0-2 SU in their most recent series with the Tampa Bay Rays and have lost six of their last 10 games. Boston struggled against the Rays, allowing Tampa Bay to score a combined 15 runs in the series while scoring just five runs. This has not been a common trend for Boston this season as they are averaging 4.71 runs per game (T-8th) with a team ERA of 3.63 (7th). In Boston’s defense, they have a plethora of pitchers on the injury list including Rich Hill, Josh Taylor, Garrett Whitlock, and Nathan Eovaldi. The right-hander Josh Winckowski is expected to take the mound Thursday.

The Yankees are 2-1 SU against the Red Sox this season. I like that trend to continue and for New York to take game-one of this series with Cole taking the mound. The Red Sox also have too many injuries in their bullpen right now to handle one of the best offenses in the league for nine innings. Not much value in the Yankees moneyline so will be playing the runline here.

Score Prediction: Yankees 6, Red Sox 3
Best Bet: Yankees -1.5

New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox – Current Form

The Yankees won against the Guardians last Sunday with 2-1 and then split the series with the Pirates last Wednesday. In the second contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, the New York Yankees were in their best form in the last five games, not allowing the Pittsburgh Pirates to score one single run. They dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates with 16 runs on Wednesday, in the second of a two-game series. The second-place Red Sox have now lost back-to-back series against the Cubs and the Rays. The Rays were unable to score a single run against the Boston Red Sox on Monday, which was Boston’s best result in the last two series. Against the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston’s defense allowed for eight runs in the second game of the series on Tuesday.

New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox – Pitching Matchup

New York: Gerrit Cole (7-2, 2.99 ERA)

The Yankees’ right-hander Gerrit Cole owns a 7-2 record and 2.99 ERA in his 16th start of the season. Cole also posted a 1.01 WHIP, while striking out 117 and walking 26 batters in 93.1 innings this season. The Yankees edged the Cleveland Guardians, 4-13 on July 2, 2022 behind Cole’s six strong innings of work. The 31-year-old yielded two runs on three hits, while striking out six and issuing three walks. Pitching on the road this season, Cole is 4-0 with a 3.80 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, 19 walks and 54 strikeouts over 42.2 innings in eight starts.

Boston: Josh Winckowski (3-2, 3.12 ERA)

Boston’ right-hander Josh Winckowski takes the mound for his fifth start of the season. Winckowski looks to improve on a 3-2 record and 3.12 ERA in 26 innings, while striking out 19, walking seven batters, and posting a 1.39 WHIP. Winckowski owns a 2-1 home record this season in three starts at Fenway Park. In those outings, he has posted a 3.68 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, five walks, and nine strikeouts in 14.2 innings of work.
