Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox Betting Prediction

Cleveland enters this matchup second in the AL Central standings, two games behind the Minnesota Twins for first place. The Guardians won six of their last 10 games prior to the All-Star break and gained some crucial ground on the Twins in the race for the NL Central. Cleveland ranks amongst the middle of the league in terms of offense with a batting average of .249 (9th), on base percentage of .314 (16th), slugging percentage of .384 (19th), and 391 total runs (17th). The bullpen has been solid on the season with a team ERA of 3.87 (14th). Right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill (6-5, 3.75 ERA) is expected to take the mound Friday.

The White Sox are currently third in the AL Central standings, three games behind the Minnesota Twins for first place. Chicago was on a roll before the All-Star break, winning seven of their last 10 games and gaining four-games on the Twins over that stretch. The offense has been subpar in the first half of the season with a batting average of .257 (3rd), on base percentage of .311 (19th), slugging percentage of .385 (18th), and 406 total runs (T-14th). Chicago’s bullpen has struggled at times and have a team ERA of 3.98 (19th) after 92 games played. The right-hander Lucas Giolito (6-5, 4.69 ERA) is scheduled to get the start on Friday.

The Guardians have won six of nine games against the White Sox this season and are still (+135) underdogs. I like the value in that considering these teams are evenly matched and Cleveland is at home. Quantrill has been the better pitcher throughout the season, but Giolito has pitched very well against the Guardians twice this season, giving up a combined two runs in 13.1 innings of work. Regardless, backing Cleveland moneyline here as it offers the best value on the board.

Cleveland: Cal Quantrill (7-5, 3.75 ERA)

Cleveland’s right-hander Cal Quantrill takes the mound for his 17th start of the season. Quantrill looks to improve on a 7-5 record and 3.75 ERA in 100.2 innings, while striking out 63, walking 30 batters, and posting a 1.29 WHIP. Cleveland’s 27-year-old right-hander earned the win in his last start, which came at home against the Detroit Tigers July 16, 2022. In his seven starts on the road this season, Quantrill is 2-5 with a 4.66 ERA, a 1.58 WHIP, 14 walks and 22 strikeouts over 38.2 innings of work.

Chicago: Lucas Giolito (6-5, 4.69 ERA)

Lucas Giolito will make his 16th start of the season for Chicago, who’s hoping to find some traction after posting a 6-5 record and 4.69 ERA thus far, while tallying a 1.40 WHIP, 32 walks, and 102 strikeouts across 88.1 innings of action. Giolito grabbed the win in his last start, which came on the road against the Cleveland Guardians on July 13, 2022. He allowed one run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in an eventual 1-2 the White Sox win.
