HOUSTON ASTROS vs. NEW YORK YANKEES BETTING PREDICTION

The Astros remain undefeated in the postseason after a 5-0 win over the Yankees on Saturday. It looks like nothing phases this team at the moment, they simply have been taking care of business. The offense finished Game 3 with six hits, one home run, five total runs, and went 2-8 with runners in scoring position. A two-run shot by Chas McCormick in the top of the second gave the Astros the lead and another three runs scored in the sixth inning gave this bullpen room for error. Starting pitcher Cristian Javier gave up just one hit in 5.1 innings. The other five pitchers used gave up a combined two hits and zero runs in 3.2 innings of work. The right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. (Postseason: 6.0 IP, 0.00 ERA) is expected to start Game 4.

New York will need a miracle in this series as they now find themselves down 0-3 headed into Game 4. The good news is they will play two more games in New York. The bad news is that it will be near impossible to beat the Astros four straight games with how well their bullpen has pitched. The Yankees offense finished Game 3 with three hits, zero runs, and went 0-6 with runners in scoring position. With just four total runs scored in this series, the offense is struggling to say the least. Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole gave up five hits and five runs in 5.0 innings of work. The other three pitchers used gave up a combined one hit and zero runs in 4.0 innings. Southpaw pitcher Nestor Cortes (Postseason: 1-0, 2.70 ERA) will start Game 4.

I like the Astros as underdogs in Game 4 to sweep the series. The Yankees will have a slight advantage when it comes to the starting pitcher, but the rest of Houston’s bullpen has shut New York down in the first three games and have been dominant throughout the postseason. Not to mention, New York’s offense has been down in these playoffs and I do not expect them to magically turn it around when they are down 0-3 in the series. Backing the Astros Moneyline in this matchup.

HOUSTON ASTROS BETTING ANALYSIS

Houston is 6-0 SU and 4-2 ATS this postseason. The total has gone under in the Astros last six games. Following this trend, the total has gone under in six of their last seven games when playing against an opponent from the AL East Division. Houston is 12-2 in their past 14 games on the road and 5-2 in their past seven games when playing on the road against the Yankees.

The Astros offense managed to put up five runs in Game 3 with three of those runs coming with two outs on the board. To be able to score in two out scenarios is crucial and something the Yankees have not been able to do. More good news for Houston, Jose Altuve found his first hit of the postseason. I would be shocked if he doesn’t have a big moment at some point in the next couple of games. In these playoffs the Astros have a batting average of .222, on base percentage of .294, slugging percentage of .412 and have scored 25 total runs.

Houston’s bullpen gave up seven runs to the Mariners in the ALDS and have not allowed more than two runs in a game since. McCullers will look to continue that streak when he takes the mound Sunday. McCullers was solid during the regular season but only pitched in seven games, which is the main concern with him. In his postseason start against the Mariners on October 15th, McCullers went 6.0 innings and gave up two hits and zero runs.

NEW YORK YANKEES BETTING ANALYSIS

The Yankees are 3-5 SU and 4-4 ATS in these playoffs. The total has gone under in six straight games for New York. Following this trend, the total has gone under in six of their last seven games when playing the Astros. The Yankees are 2-5 in their past seven games when playing at home against Houston and 0-6 in their past six games against an opponent from the AL West Division.

New York’s offense went from one of the best throughout the regular season to arguably the worst in the playoffs. As a team they have a postseason batting average of .161, on base percentage of .250, slugging percentage of .315 and have scored 24 runs. The Yankees look like they are trying to swing for the fences every time they step up to the plate when they should be playing small ball. They need to make the Astros bullpen work if they want to stretch this series to a Game 5.

The Yankees bullpen has pitched well throughout the postseason with a team ERA of 3.06. Cole struggled a bit in Game 3, but what does it matter when the offense has only three hits on the day. Cortes will make his third postseason start and give New York a solid chance in Game 4, but that’s only if the offense comes to play. In his two postseason starts against the Guardians, Cortes went 5.0 innings in both games and gave up a combined nine hits and three runs.
