Bills vs Bengals Betting Prediction & Odds for Sunday Night Football Week 9

Matchup Spread Total Moneyline

Cincinnati was an absolute train wreck in the first few weeks of the season. The Bengals kicked off their campaign with losses in three of four games to drop to a record of 1-3 out of the gate, while averaging just 12.3 points per game on the offensive side of the ball in those four contests. And at the time, with Bengals QB Joe Burrow clearly nursing a calf injury, many fans began to speculate as to whether or not Cincy would be better off simply shutting down its star signal caller and kicking the can down the road to next year.

However, right on cue, the Bengals came surging back with three straight victories, capped off by an impressive 31-17 win over San Francisco last week. And as a result, it appears that Cincy has already won back the confidence of the general betting audience. According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the spread for this contest originally opened at Bengals -2.5 at TwinSpires, and since then, the line has shifted back to -2 despite 66% of spread tickets and 53% of the money coming in on Cincy as of Wednesday.

Quite frankly, though, one great week isn’t enough to convince me to turn around and lay points with Cincy in a matchup against a Bills team capable of rising to AFC contender status on any given night.

Buffalo is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re going to get. The Bills rank Top 4 in scoring on both sides of the ball, averaging 27.8 PPG on offense and allowing just 17.1 PPG on defense. But they’ve consistently left bettors scratching their heads along the way with a trio of inexplicable losing performances against the Jets, Patriots, and Jaguars. So, it’s always important to tread with caution when backing or fading Buffalo.

That said, the sky is the limit for Josh Allen and this Buffalo team. Whenever they bring their A-Game, the Bills are capable of dominating any given opponent, which was on full display back in Week 4 when they ran away with a 48-20 win over the Dolphins. The problem is, Buffalo hasn’t truly brought its A-Game since blowing out Miami five weeks ago. So, now the Bills find themselves tagged as underdogs against a Cincy team that ranks 23rd in scoring at 18.7 PPG on the season, having fallen short of the 20-point scoring mark in four of seven contests.

Make no mistake about it, the Bengals looked great against San Francisco last week, and such a high level of dominance very well could be par for the course for Cincy the rest of the way. This is, in fact, a team that has reached two straight AFC Championship Games while managing to retain most of its key players.

However, like I previously mentioned, even if the Bengals bring their A-Game again on Sunday night, the Bills still have a puncher’s chance at winning any given contest. And while the common narrative seems to be: Cincy is back and better than ever, I’m going to try to avoid being a prisoner of the moment and back the road underdog to win this game outright. Give me Buffalo on the moneyline.

Buffalo Bills Betting Analysis

I have to imagine that being an avid supporter (or futures bettor) of the Bills is one of the most stressful ventures in the league on a weekly basis – and that isn’t what I’m advocating for. The Bills tend to sleepwalk through the early stages of games, and then kick it into turbo drive once they get pushed around a little bit. But even when they show up to the stadium wide awake, they constantly shoot themselves in the foot in the giveaway department, highlighted by the Bills turning the ball over seven times in their last four games.

Despite all the elementary mistakes made by this team on a consistent basis, the Bills are still one of the most talented teams in the league, currently ranked 4th in points scored at 27.8 PPG and 3rd in points allowed at 17 PPG. Sure, they may be prone to the occasional letdown. But how often do you get to back a team as dangerous as Buffalo in a decent underdog spot?

Cincinnati Bengals Betting Analysis

Not too long ago, the future looked awfully gloomy for this Cincy team, as the Bengals offense appeared to be completely stuck in the mud after scoring 19 points or less in three of their first four matchups of the season to drop to a record of 1-3, while also staring down the barrel of tough matchups against the Seahawks, 49ers, Bills, Ravens, and Steelers prior to Week 12. However, the Bengals have now won three straight games, and they scored 30+ points in two of those contests. But all things considered, I’m only giving Cincy its flowers for one of those victories (San Francisco). 

The Bengals scored 34 points in a 14-point win over Arizona in Week 5, which should be expected from Joe Burrow and Co. in a matchup against a Cardinals defense that ranks 27th in scoring at 26.6 PPG. And then in Week 6, they beat Seattle, which may sound impressive at face value, but this was an ugly game in which the Bengals scored just 17 points on 214 yards of offense – yet somehow managed to squeak out a victory despite surrendering 384 total yards on defense. Admittedly, extending their win streak to three games with a win over the 49ers was an impressive feat. But that was also San Francisco’s third straight loss. So, Cincy wasn’t exactly sailing in uncharted waters last week.
