Browns vs. Eagles Picks, Predictions, Odds

Week 2 of the NFL Preseason begins on Thursday August 17, 2023 as the Cleveland Browns meet the Philadelphia Eagles from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Browns vs. Eagles Predictions

An early move on this game to the Eagles that we are not necessarily on board with for Thursday night.

Philly did battle hard vs. the preseason juggernaut Ravens last Saturday, but needed a late pick-six to slip inside of the number.

Do not expect much if any of Jalen Hurts, and let's see if Stanford rookie Tanner McKee can look as good as he did at times at QB last week.

Meanwhile, Cleveland was very unfortunate not to beat Washington, faulty short-yardage plays out of the one-back (why do teams insist this is a good short-yardage formation?) and spotty FG kicking costing Cleveland a win.

But likely to see more of Deshaun Watson, whose first drive looked sharp all of the way to the Washington doorstep before fizzling, and the real sensation of August thus far has been UCLA rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, almost flawless in two appearances and making a big push to usurp journeyman Joshua Dobbs as the main backup for head coach Kevin Stefanski behind Watson.

Best Bet: Browns +4 (-110)

Browns vs. Eagles Quarterback Rotations

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns' quarterback depth chart for the 2023 preseason is as follows:

  • Starter: Deshaun Watson
  • Back-up: Joshua Dobbs
  • Third-string: Dorian Thompson-Robinson

Here is a look at the Browns' quarterbacks and their potential roles in the preseason:

  • Deshaun Watson: Watson is the Browns' starting quarterback and will likely get the majority of the snaps in the preseason. He will be looking to build on his 2022 season and prove that he can be a franchise quarterback.
  • Joshua Dobbs: Dobbs is the Browns' backup quarterback and will likely get the second-most snaps in the preseason. He is a veteran quarterback who has started in the NFL before. Dobbs will be looking to win the backup job and show that he can be a reliable option for Watson.
  • Dorian Thompson-Robinson: Thompson-Robinson is a rookie quarterback who was drafted by the Browns in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He is a dual-threat quarterback who has potential. Thompson-Robinson will be looking to make a case for himself as the backup quarterback in 2024.
  • Grant Calcaterra: Calcaterra is an undrafted free agent who is a dual-threat quarterback. He will likely get some snaps in the preseason as the Browns evaluate him as a developmental project.

The Browns' quarterback rotation is expected to be competitive in the preseason. Watson is the clear starter, but Dobbs and Thompson-Robinson are both capable backups. Calcaterra is a long shot to make the team, but he could get some snaps in the preseason to see what he can do.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback depth chart for the 2023 preseason is as follows:

  • Starter: Jalen Hurts
  • Back-up: Marcus Mariota
  • Third-string: Tanner McKee

Here is a look at the Eagles' quarterbacks and their potential roles in the preseason:

  • Jalen Hurts: Hurts is the Eagles' starting quarterback and will likely get the majority of the snaps in the preseason. He will be looking to build on his 2022 season and prove that he can be a franchise quarterback.
  • Marcus Mariota: Mariota is the Eagles' backup quarterback and will likely get the second-most snaps in the preseason. He is a veteran quarterback who has started in the NFL before. Mariota will be looking to win the backup job and show that he can be a reliable option for Hurts.
  • Tanner McKee: McKee is a rookie quarterback who was drafted by the Eagles in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He is a dual-threat quarterback who has potential. McKee will be looking to make a case for himself as the backup quarterback in 2024.
  • Ian Book: Book is an undrafted free agent who is a dual-threat quarterback. He will likely get some snaps in the preseason as the Eagles evaluate him as a developmental project.

The Eagles' quarterback rotation is expected to be competitive in the preseason. Hurts is the clear starter, but Mariota and McKee are both capable backups. Book is a long shot to make the team, but he could get some snaps in the preseason to see what he can do.
