Rams vs Lions Betting Prediction & Odds | NFL Wild Card Game

Matchup Spread Total Moneyline

The Lions entered the season with sky high expectations after closing their previous campaign with eight of their last 10 games – and for the most part, they’ve lived up to those lofty expectations as Detroit won the NFC North with a record of 12-5 this season on the heels of an offense that ranks 5th in scoring and 3rd in total yardage.

However, it hasn’t exactly been all sunshine and rainbows for Detroit either, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The Lions defense ranks 23rd in points allowed and 19th in total yardage – which is a huge step forward for a defensive unit that ranked 28th and 32nd in those respective categories last season. But still not good enough to give me confidence in their ability to make a deep playoff run.

The overwhelming majority of the betting audience may beg to differ, though. According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, TwinSpires originally opened the line for this contest at Lions -3, which has toggled between -3 and -3.5 throughout the week with 60% of tickets and 63% of the money coming in on Detroit as of Thursday evening.

In the grand scheme of things, I’ve been quite impressed with Detroit this season, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for this team. So this isn’t supposed to be a “fade” of the Lions. It’s more about how great the Rams have played during the back half of the season, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

Not too long ago, the Rams appeared to have their sights set on next season after stumbling out to a frustrating 3-6 record to open their campaign. However, LA has looked like a totally different team since its Week 10 bye, as the Rams closed the regular season with an impressive 7-1 run, while averaging over 28 PPG in those eight contests – and their only loss during that span coming in an overtime thriller against the Ravens.

Push comes to shove, the Lions’ dominance on the offensive side of the ball gives them puncher’s chance at winning any given contest. But the Rams have all of the momentum heading into this matchup – and all things considered, these teams seem to be pretty equally matched. 

I highly doubt Detroit is going to be able to slow down a Rams offense that has scored 26-plus points in six of their last seven games. I’m taking the field goal with LA.

Los Angeles Rams Betting Analysis

In terms of title contention, the Rams weren’t expected to make much noise in the NFC this season. LA originally opened with the third-worst odds to win the conference only ahead of the Buccaneers and Cardinals – and for half of the season, the oddsmakers’ initial assessment appeared to be accurate as the Rams lost six of nine contests to open the season.

However, LA has arguably been the most dominant team in the NFC since their Week 10 bye, as the Rams enter Wild Card Weekend following wins in seven of their last eight games, with over half of those wins coming by eight points or more (4) – and their only loss coming in overtime against the top team in the AFC – might I add, a team that crushed Detroit.

Detroit Lions Betting Analysis

The Lions wield enough offensive firepower to win any given contest, and sometimes the best defense truly is great offense. However, by no means is their offense totally unstoppable, highlighted by Detroit scoring 22 points or less in three of their last seven games – which is a slippery slope for a Lions team that has surrendered 28-plus points in five of their last nine contests.
