Terrell Suggs on the Chiefs, Joe Flacco and Advice for Cam Skattebo
Two-time Super Bowl champion Terrell Suggs has never been shy about sharing his opinions.
From Travis Kelce’s future to Joe Flacco’s future in Cleveland and even advice for Arizona State star Cam Skattebo, the Ravens legend gave his unfiltered take in an interview with VegasInsider.
The Eagles had a dominating victory over the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. What do you think they need to do to get back to their winning ways?
The Chiefs are coming off a season where they fell short against the Eagles in the Super Bowl. But Suggs doesn’t think Kansas City needs to make sweeping changes.
“First of all, out of the past six years, they've been in the Super Bowl three times and won. That's unheard of. They're the first team I want to say since the Patriots did in 2003 and 2004 that went back-to-back. That's incredibly hard.
For them to be in the show for that many consecutive years and playing all those games. But last year they didn't get it done. Everybody's kind, ‘oh, what's going on?’ I don't think they need to change anything. If you're in the show, you're in the show.
The season is so long and you're winning and you're going on these long playoff runs… we are human! People forget we're human and your body has to heal. So they've been a victim of winning a lot. But you don't ever want to not win because you don't know if you ever will get back to that level of success.
So I think they just need to heal up. And keep doing what they're doing. Keep bringing in fresh talent for Mahomes. As long as they have 15 under center and Andy Reid as the head coach, they're gonna be a problem. They're gonna be successful.
So I think as long as they keep Mahomes with personnel, with guys that can play this game, they're gonna continue to play good football.”
Travis Kelce has been on a decline for the last two seasons and this is his contract year. Would it be a surprise to you if this ends up being his last season with the Chiefs?
With Travis Kelce heading into a contract year, questions have popped up about whether this could be his last season in Kansas City. Suggs isn’t buying it.
“That's always a possibility, but I don't think so. Who do you replace him with?
There has to be someone that can do what Travis does.
It always rubs me the wrong way when people, or journalists, say, ‘oh, his production has fallen off.’ No, his production hasn't fallen off. It ain't like he's getting hurt, missing games or dropping balls.
Teams understand. This is the NFL, this is the most difficult sport to be successful in because it is a team sport. Other teams know that Travis Kelce has been one of the premier tight ends in the league. He's in the top three. There's Mark Andrews, there's George Kittle and there's him [Kelce].
Baltimore tried doubling him, we tried tripling him. We zoned him and he still managed to impact and affect the game. Travis Kelce is still Travis Kelce.
This is definitely an offensive driven league. I still think he's one of the premier players and if he's going into a contract year, they're gonna approach him.
That's gonna be their argument: oh, your numbers are down. But he’s been in the Super Bowl the last three, three or four years. And he had a significant role in that, in their success.
They're gonna try to low ball him. They should let him at least have the opportunity to finish out his Hall of Fame career in Kansas City. He's got three rings. Hopefully the business side won't bite them in the ass. But the business side has gotten all of us so, we'll see!”
Let’s talk about Mahomes. He's already in the conversation of being one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. What are your thoughts on that? Is he up there yet or is there something still left to be done?
Patrick Mahomes’ resume keeps growing, and Suggs believes he belongs in the conversation with the all-time greats.
“I think [he is up there with the greatest QB’s]. Just because of where the game has gone. It's a passing league, it's a quarterback driven league, and he showed up.
From the time Mahomes started, he's never had a losing season, like ever. He's never missed the playoffs. I think his resume and what he's done puts him up there.”
Taylor Swift’s connection to the Chiefs and the NFL has obviously brought in a new audience and new fans. What are your thoughts on that?
The Chiefs have also gotten a new wave of fans thanks to Travis Kelce’s relationship with Taylor Swift. Suggs thinks it’s only helped the league.
“Anything that helps the game grow. Taylor Swift, I don't know her background before she got with Travis, but I'm not sure if she was into football or not. She's one of the biggest stars in the world, if not the biggest.
All her fans are gonna gravitate to what she likes. So if they weren't into football before, they damn sure are now. And they're probably all Chiefs fans!
I think it’s only a good thing for the league.”
What are your expectations from your former teammate Joe Flacco, who’s been named the Browns’ starting QB for Week 1?
With Joe Flacco named Cleveland’s Week 1 starter, Suggs had nothing but praise for his former Super Bowl teammate.
“Joe doesn't get enough appreciation for being a Super Bowl winning quarterback. It's like this quarterback won the Super Bowl and it was at a time where our defense wasn't running the team. It was our offense that got us to the Super Bowl that year. And it was led by Joe Flacco.
So I think they got a good thing and a veteran quarterback to mentor the younger quarterbacks. He’s already played in Cleveland before, so he knows the fans there and their expectations. I think it's a good fit for him and their organization.
But we all know that they evidently wanna either go with Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders. It's a good start for Cleveland so we just gotta see how it pans out.”
What advice would you give to Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel who’ll be sharing a locker room with Flacco? What do you think they can learn from him?
Suggs also had some words of wisdom for Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel as they sit behind Flacco.
“I would tell them to take their time and just to soak everything up. They’ve both had success in their football careers in high school and in college. But they’re not used to sitting behind someone.
In the NFL game, it's very difficult to master and be the face of a team. They need to take the mentorship. Just learn, you know what I mean? Learn as much as they can before they actually are thrown into the fire.
We've seen some quarterbacks take those reins and take off with it. And we also saw some quarterbacks that came outta college and were expected to be this big thing. They've been thrown in there, week one and their career never takes off.
So you don't wanna be one of those guys. I think if you bide your time and you can learn as much as you can learn before you're the number one guy, I think that's a big benefit.”
You and Cam Skattebo both made your names at ASU. What stands out to you most about his game?
Suggs also gave a nod to current Arizona State standout Cam Skattebo, who’s looking to make the leap to the NFL.
“His work ethic. The ability to be a running back in today's game and dominate the game. It's rare, like we discussed earlier, it's a passing driven league. It's a quarterback driven league, that's college and pros.
And to have a back come in and lead your team, it's rare and I think that's awesome. We both had a blue collar, ‘we’re gonna show up to work every day’ kind of attitude with our game. We let our game do our talking for us.
I love that for him. Now, does he have what it takes to be a big time back in his league? We’ll see! I think so. I think he has the talent, but it's a mentality thing.
You gotta be in the best situation. Like Trent Richardson — big prospect out of Alabama. I don't think he went to a winning situation. We knew that he was a problem. I don't know if he just didn't peak when they wanted him to peak. I don't know what went on with that case.
But you don't want your career to be like that. You wanna be in the best situation possible, so we'll see.”
