Champions League Quarterfinals Format

Similar to the Champions League Round of 16, the eight clubs in the Champions League quarterfinals will play home-away matches with the winner being determined by aggregate goal score of the two matches.

If the teams are level in aggregate after the 90 minutes of regulation after the second leg, then they will proceed to play two 15-minute halves of added extra time. If a winner is still not determined within the AET, then the match and qualified team will be decided by penalty-kick shootouts.

Champions League Quarterfinals Recent History

The 2022-23 Champions League format was the first time in recent history that the ‘away goals rule’ was eliminated from the competition. Put simply, if the total aggregate goals in the two legs were equal then the team scored more goals as the visitors would win the match and advance.

In last year’s Champions League Quarterfinals, bettors watched a pair of English Premier League and La Liga clubs advance to the next stage but it easily could have been 3-1 to the EPL clubs. However, Real Madrid captured a 5-4 aggregate victory over Chelsea as Karim Benzema led Los Blancos to the victory with an extra-time winner.

Champions League Quarterfinals Draw

The draw for the 2023-24 Champions League Quarterfinals draw will take place on Friday March 15, 2024 and the Round of 16 concludes two days earlier on Wednesday March 13. Unlike the previous knockout stage, none of the teams are split into separate pots. That means any of the eight remaining clubs can be drawn against each other regardless of their group finish or if they are from the same national league.
