Methodology: How the Tailgating Score Was Calculated
The 2025 Tailgating Index ranks America’s best states, cities, and teams for game-day fans using three key pillars: Affordability (40%), Fan Passion (40%), and Accessibility (20%).
Each location received a Tailgating Score out of 100, based on verified data collected between May and August 2025.
1. Affordability (40%)
This pillar measures how budget-friendly it is to tailgate in each area. It includes the average cost of:
- • Beer prices: Based on AmericanCraftBeer.com’s 2024 case-price data for Bud Light and Miller Lite, converted to a six-pack equivalent.
- • Meat prices: Combined average of beef, pork, chicken, and hot-dog prices from Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) regional price series for August 2025.
- • BBQ fuel prices: Propane cost calculated from U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) residential propane prices for May 12 2025 multiplied by 4.7 gallons, and charcoal prices averaged from Walmart and Home Depot retail listings.
- • Game-day parking costs: Compiled from Parkopedia, SpotHero, and BestParking using official or verified rates for stadium and nearby lots.
Lower costs earned higher affordability scores.
2. Fan Passion (40%)
This pillar captures the excitement and engagement of football fans. It includes:
- • Search interest: Collected from Google Keyword Planner for September 2024 – August 2025, using a clustered average of tailgating-related keywords for each NFL and college football market.
- • Fan sentiment: Analysis of more than one million comments and reviews from Reddit, Google Reviews, and TripAdvisor, focusing on NFL and college football tailgating experiences. Data were gathered through PRAW (Python Reddit API Wrapper) and the Google Places API and processed with the CardiffNLP RoBERTa sentiment model to calculate positive and negative sentiment.
Higher engagement and positivity produced stronger passion scores.
3. Accessibility (20%)
This pillar assesses how convenient and tailgate-friendly each environment is. It includes:
Greater parking access and more teams resulted in higher accessibility scores.
Each metric was normalised on a 0–100 scale and weighted according to its pillar to calculate the final Tailgating Score.
Together, these metrics reveal where America’s most passionate and most affordable tailgating experiences truly thrive.
