A pair of early evening starts in the Big East and the Big Ten highlight Tuesday night’s college basketball betting action.

The No. 13 Butler Bulldogs will try and get back on track in a road game against the No. 9 Villanova Wildcats. At the same time, the No. 21 Illinois Fighting Illini will be on the road in West Lafayette to tangle with the Purdue Boilermakers for the second time this season.

Betting Matchup

Butler’s drop in the latest AP Top 25 was rather steep coming off back-to-back losses to Seton Hall at home and DePaul on the road as a favorite. This slide doubled its previous straight-up losses on the year. The Bulldogs are now 15-3 SU. The two losses against the spread dropped their record to 11-6-1 against the closing number.

The total has gone OVER in their last three games. Senior guard Kamar Baldwin has exceeded his team-high scoring average (15.1 points) in each of his last five starts. Butler is averaging 68.7 points per game and allowing 57.1.

The Wildcats (14-3 SU, 7-9-1 ATS) are 4-1 SU in Big East play and a game and a half behind No. 10 Seton Hall in the standings. The lone loss was a 71-60 setback on Jan. 4 to Marquette as slight 1 ½-point road underdogs. They have failed to cover in their last two wins against DePaul and Connecticut at home.

The total has stayed UNDER in eight of Villanova’s last 10 outings. Jermaine Samuels scored 19 points in Saturday’s win over UConn. The Wildcats are averaging 74.8 PPG and giving up 66.8 points a game on defense.

Betting Matchup

The Fighting Illini have fought their way into the national rankings with four SU victories in their last four games. This includes Saturday’s 75-71 home victory against Northwestern. Illinois (13-5 SU, 8-8-1 ATS).failed to cover as heavy 12 ½-point home favorites in that latest win to fall to 2-3 ATS in their last five games.

The total has stayed UNDER in seven of its last 10 games. The Fighting Illini were aided by Trent Frazier’s 16 points in Saturday’s win. This includes four three-point buckets. He is one of six different players averaging at least nine points a game as part of the team’s 75.8-point scoring average.

Purdue has dropped three of its last four games SU to fall to 10-8 SU with a 3-4 record in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers have failed to cover in six of their last nine games as part of an 8-10 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER 124 ½ points in Saturday’s 57-50 loss Maryland as 6 ½-point road underdogs and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last four outings.

Purdue has averaged just 59.0 points over its last four games, including a dismal 37 points in an earlier 26-point road loss to Illinois as a two-point underdog on Jan. 5.
