Penn Quakers vs. FSU Seminoles Predictions

What makes this a difficult game to handicap is the fact that Penn hasn't played in nearly two years. There aren't any real trends to consider for a team that has missed over 400 days of basketball, so let's focus on FSU's numbers for a bit. The Seminoles went 12-11-2 on the ATS last season while also covering nine of 13 games when playing in Tallahassee.

As the favorite, however, FSU was just .500 in covering the spread last year (11-9-2) and failed to cover five of its last six games to end the season. However, the Seminoles cover well at home and are now facing a program that hasn't played competitive ball in quite some time. Although Penn is a threat to win the Ivy League, it might be too much to ask for the Quakers to score against a defense that gave up 69 points per game a season ago.

FSU covered -25.5-points to open the season against North Florida a year ago, while also covering large spreads against Miami-Florida and Boston College. With that said, FSU failed to cover large spreads of 15 points or more against UCF and Gardner-Webb - also failing to cover -10.5-points against UNC-Greensboro in the March Madness Tournament.

This game is really down to how Penn responds after not playing a game in over a year and a half. The spread is a bit of a toss up due to FSU's struggles to cover large spreads for most of the season in 2020 - along with dropping five of six ATS.

I'm fine with the UNDER here based on team point scoring and allowance totals, but there's too much uncertainty surrounding the Ivy League to begin the season its tough to make a case betting on the conference this early. Also 20 points is a lot to cover for any team, so I recommend the UNDER of the two markets but with little-to-no conviction in either.

Looking back at Penn two seasons ago, the top two scorers were seniors in A.J. Brodeur and Devon Goodman. Both are gone as Jordan Dingle goes from freshman to junior and the leader of this team in 2021-22. Dingle saw 13.5 points per game as a freshman, and was one of four players for Penn to average double-digit points. He will need to carry this team, along with Max Martz.

Ryan Betley is also gone, so it's imperative these two players put the Quakers on their shoulders as leaders of this team. Lucas Monroe is another player who saw some important playing time two years ago as a freshman and now returning for the 2021-22 season. Keep an eye on him, but as it will be to begin the season for all the Ivy schools, we will see which players step up after a long lapse of not playing. For Penn, it's the three mentioned above.

FSU lost a lot of players from last season, but Anthony Polite returns as the top target for the Seminoles this season. The Seminoles lost Scottie Barnes, Raiquan Gray, M.J. Walker and Balsa Koprivica from a season ago, the top four scorers outside of Polite. FSU has covered nine of 13 games at home, but Polite is the only player who has seen enough court time to impact that trend.

There is a concern for who will step up on offense for FSU outside of Polite. Malik Osborne is the next highest scorer that returns for FSU, and he only averaged 5.9 points per game. Penn might be able to keep this game within striking distance for a majority before the Seminoles pull away, as I expect the FSU offense to sputter throughout before finding some traction half way through the second half.

Penn Quakers vs. FSU Seminoles Betting Conclusion

FSU typically covers at home, and although I think the Seminoles start slow they should pick up steam and cover a large spread. I still think going UNDER is the best play for a few reasons, but mainly rust. Penn hasn't played in quite some time, as stated many times already, while FSU has some uncertainty in scoring. If FSU does indeed struggle to find offense, the UNDER should hit. If FSU has players step up for the big void left by last year's departures, then they should cover.

Penn Quakers vs. FSU Seminoles Betting Trends

  • FSU has covered the spread in nine of its last 13 home games.
  • FSU has failed to cover the spread in five of its last six games.
  • FSU has gone UNDER the point total in four of its last five games.
