Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Seton Hall Pirates Predictions

The Buckeyes are coming off a disappointing 71-65 loss on the road against Xavier, and now they have to turn around and play a first-round game in this Thanksgiving invitational against a team which just upended Ohio State’s rival, Michigan, in Ann Arbor. This Pirates team doesn’t play, and will be another huge test for Ohio State.

E.J. Liddell showed up for Ohio State, as he always does, posting 17 points with seven rebounds and a ridiculous eight blocked shots against Xavier. However, Zed Key managed just six points in the Xavier game, and Malaki Branham connected on just three of his 11 field-goal attempts, ending up with seven. Bench player Meechie Johnson Jr. had 14 points, including three triples, to help out, but he was one of just three players in double digits in scoring.

Ohio State ended up shooting just 38% (23-of-61), and 38% (8-of-21) from behind the arc, and that’s not going to get it done.

As mentioned above, Seton Hall is coming off an impressive 67-65 upset of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Jared Rhoden was the difference maker with 16 points, and Ike Obiagu stepped up with four of the six blocked shots for the Pirates. Seton Hall had both Bryce Aiken and Tray Jackson score 13 points off the bench, with Jackson a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

Ohio State Buckeyes Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 3-1
  • ATS: 1-3
  • O/U: 3-1

Ohio State has really struggled during the early going against the number. Some might argue that they should have lost the first game outright to Akron, needing a tip-in with 0.5 seconds left to win it 67-66 as 16.5-point favorites. They also didn’t come close to covering against Niagara in an 84-74 win, failing against a 19.5-point number.

The Buckeyes did spank Bowling Green by an 89-58 score as 15.5-point favorites, but they lost the first true road test at Xavier as 2.5-point favorites.

Total bettors are starting to pay close attention to Ohio State, however, as the OVER has hit in three consecutive games for the Buckeyes. Ohio State is posted a healthy 76.3 PPG, while allowing 67.3 PPG. In neutral-site games, the Buckeyes were 4-2 SU/ATS in six such situations last season, including the stunning loss to Oral Roberts in the NCAA Tournament, for which the Xavier kids let them know about frequently the other night.

Seton Hall Pirates Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 3-0
  • ATS: 3-0
  • O/U: 0-3

Obviously the win over the Wolverines is the biggest to date for the Pirates, but they haven’t been a one-trick pony. Seton Hall is not just 3-0 SU, but it is 3-0 ATS while hitting the UNDER in each of its three games.

Seton Hall opened with a dominant 93-49 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson as 27-point favorites, while easily hitting the UNDER due to its defense. The Pirates then worked over a pretty decent Ivy League side, Yale, winning 80-44 to cover an 11.5-point number.

So far the Pirates have had four scorers average double digits in points, and Rhoden is the big presence down low with 12.0 PPG and 7.5 RPG.

If you look to last season, Seton Hall has actually hit the UNDER in eight consecutive games, and 10 of the past 11 games overall. In neutral-site games, the Pirates were just 1-2 SU/ATS in three such situations last season.

Seton Hall has gone UNDER the point total in three straight games. (AP)

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Seton Hall Pirates Betting Conclusion

I don’t really trust the Buckeyes so far. In four games they have looked dominant in just one game, against Bowling Green, and they’re not exactly a top-tier team. The Buckeyes probably should be 2-2 SU, but lucked out against Akron. Liddell has been everything as advertised, but he has very little help.

The Pirates have been impressive, winning and cover all three games, using a strong brand of defense which they have carried over from last season. Rhoden and Obiagu can be a presence down low to at least slow Liddell, and the Pirates should be able to deal a second straight loss to a Big Ten titan.
