Updated 2022 Final Four Betting Odds, Contenders

It’s that time of year. The college basketball regular season will come to an end next weekend, setting the table for March Madness. Preseason favorites Baylor and Gonzaga met in the final last year with the Bears hammering the Bulldogs to claim their first national championship. Those programs are among the favorites again this season with Gonzaga an odds-on favorite to make the Final Four.

Gonzaga may have lost Jalen Suggs, Corey Kispert, and Joel Ayayi to the NBA, but the Bulldogs were the No. 1 ranked team in the country prior to their season-ending loss to WCC rival St. Mary’s. The conference is as tough as it’s been in over a decade, and the Bulldogs have wins over fellow contenders UCLA, Texas Tech, and Texas. Ken Pomeroy has the Bulldogs ranked No. 1 nationally too as Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren are both top-three players according to his metrics.

There is reason to be skeptical of Kentucky’s chances of making the Final Four. The Wildcats only played three good non-conference teams, and they lost to both Duke and Notre Dame before beating Kansas late last month. The SEC is much better than it has been in the past, and Wooden Award frontrunner Oscar Tshiebwe has been a menace in the paint, but there is a good chance the Wildcats aren’t even a No. 1 seed.

Among the top teams, Baylor has the best value. The Bears are being somewhat underestimated by the oddsmakers even though they are the defending national champions. They are a half-game behind Kansas in the toughest conference in the country, and they have impressive non-conference wins over Villanova, Michigan State, Oregon, and VCU. Ken Pomeroy has Baylor rated as the third-best team nationally as this is a well-rounded team with no real flaws.

A dark horse to like is UConn at 12-1 to make the Final Four. The Huskies have now won five straight games in the tough Big East, and they bested Villanova last Tuesday. Adama Sanogo and R.J. Cole are a good inside-outside combination, and Tyrese Martin is one of the top three-point shooters in the country.
