Tech Trends – Week 1

UCLA at CINCINNATI...Fickell 4-2 as home chalk LY, though Cincy only 3-8 in role previous three seasons. Bearcats dropped 5 of last 7 vs. spread in 2018 despite fine 11-2 overall SU mark. Chip only 5-7 vs. line in Bruin debut LY though 3-2 as road dog. Bruins no winning spread season since 2013 (23-39 vs. points since 2014).

GEORGIA TECH at CLEMSON...Collins GT debut! Collins covered 6 of last 8 as dog with Temple, and was 14-7-1 last 22 vs. line with Owls. Paul Johnson was 14-8-1 as dog with Jackets 2014-18 but lost and failed to cover last four vs. Tigers (0-3-1 vs. line). Dabo just 3-3 last six laying 30 or more but is 13-8-1 as DD chalk the past two seasons.

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL at TULANE...Butch Davis 4-0 as dog LY and 10-4 in role since 2017 with Golden Panthers. FIU also covered all six away from home last season and all five non-CUSA games. Wave just 1-3 as home chalk LY.

TEXAS STATE at TEXAS A&M...Spavital TSU debut! Bobcats did cover 5 of last 7 in 2018 for Withers. Jimbo 5-1 as home chalk LY and 10-3 overall vs. line, also 4-1 as DD chalk. Ags also covered all five non-SEC games a year ago.

KENT STATE at ARIZONA STATE...Sean Lewis 3-1 vs. line non-MAC in his Kent State debut LY. Herm 4-2 vs. spread at Tempe LY, continuing recent good ASU home marks dating to Todd Graham years (Sun Devils 25-14 vs. spread as host since 2012). Herm 2-1 as DD chalk in 2018.

UTAH at BYU... Visiting team has covered last three meetings since series resumed in 2016 (played in bowl in 2015 season), with Utah winning SU in last eight meetings. Utes 13-7-1 vs. spread last 21 away from Salt Lake City, 6-4-1 last 11 as visiting chalk. Sitake 6-1 last 7 as dog and is 13-5 vs. points last 18 on board.

RICE at ARMY...Army brutalized Rice in 2016-17, DNP 2018. Owls however were 5-2 as visiting dog LY, all getting hefty DDs. Army just 3-3 as home chalk LY, Monken only 7-12 in role since 2015.

UTAH STATE at WAKE FOREST....Andersen debut II for Utags! USU 9-3-1 vs. line in 2019 and covered all five non-MW games. Andersen was 7-0 as dog his last two years with Utags 2011-12. Deacs only 1-6 vs. spread at Winston-Salem LY, Clawson 7-9-1 as chalk with Deacs since 2014.

WISCONSIN at SOUTH FLORIDA...USF no SU wins last six in 2018 and 3-8 last 11 vs. spread. Bulls also 1-6 vs. line LY at Tampa 1-8 last nine vs. spread as host for Charlie Strong. Badgers have won and covered last six away from Madison vs. non-Big 10 foes and are 11-3 as visiting chalk for Paul Chryst since 2015.

TULSA at MICHIGAN STATE...Dantonio just 2-7 vs. spread last nine as host vs. non-Big Ten foes. Spartans just 16-25 overall as East Lansing chalk since 2012, and have failed to cover last seven at home against anyone. Tulsa 11-7 as visiting dog for Montgomery, though only 5-6 past two seasons.

UMASS at RUTGERS...Ugh! Bell UMass debut! Ash actually 15-9 vs. line last two seasons, and ‘gers was 5-2 vs. line as home LY. Scarlet Knights have also covered both as DD chalk past two years. Mass only 1-4 as DD dog LY.

COLORADO STATE vs. COLORADO (at Broncos Stadium at Mile High, Denver)...Tucker CU debut! Buffs have won SU last four in series (3-0-1 vs. line) and have won and covered last two openers. Rams on 5-14 spread skid since mid 2017 and just 3-7 vs. line last 10 outside of MW.

PURDUE at NEVADA...Pack 8-2 vs. spread last 10 at Reno for Jay Norvell (4-2 as home dog that span). Brohm 6-3 vs. spread as visitor with Purdue, and Riveters a surprising 17-6 vs. line as visitor since 2014. Brohm however only 3-5 as chalk in 2018.

OKLAHOMA STATE at OREGON STATE...Gundy 7-4-1 as DD chalk past two seasons though just 1-3 as road chalk LY. Gundy has also won and covered ten straight vs. non-Big 12 foes. Beavs 0-5 as home dog LY in J Smith debut, just 6-14-1 as dog past two seasons.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC at OHIO STATE...Lane Kiffin sagged to 3-8-1 vs. line LY after 10-3-1 spread mark in 2017. Also 0-2 as DD dog in 2018, though was 4-1-1 vs. lin3 away from Boca Raton in 2017. Ryan Day had a trial run LY and was 3-0 SU, 2-1 vs. line with OSU. Buckeyes just 15-15 as DD home chalk past three years but just 9-12 last 21 vs. line since mid 2017.

SOUTH ALABAMA at NEBRASKA...Campbell was 6-6 vs. line in USA debut LY but only 3-5 as DD dog. Getting 27 or more, Jags were 2-1 in 2018. Huskers 1-5 as DD chalk the past two seasons (1-2 for Frost LY) and 2-6 as Lincoln chalk since 2017. Frost only 4-6 laying DD past two years at UCF and Huskers, who are also 1-6-1 last 8 vs. spread against non-Big 10 (0-3 in role LY).

EAST CAROLINA at NC STATE...Mike Houston ECU debut! Pirates were a miserable 10-25-1 vs. line for the overmatched Scottie Montgomery the past three years, though biggest win that span might have been upset vs. NCS in 2016. ECU 3-11-1 as road dog past 3 years. NCS 11-8 as DD chalk for Doeren since 2015.

AKRON at ILLINOIS...Arth Akron debut! Bowden was okay 9-7 as road dog past three years, and Zips covered both on road at Big Ten LY (NU and Iowa). Lovie just 6-14 vs. spread at Champaign-Urbana since 2016 (though 3-3 as non-Big 10 host).

BALL STATE vs. INDIANA (at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis)...Tom Allen 0-3 as chalk away from Bloomington LY (though he is 5-1 as home chalk past two years, including 38-10 win vs. Ball LY). Allen 0-2 vs. line past two openers and IU 2-6 vs. line last 8 openers. Cards just 5-13 as dog past two years (3-9 as dog away from Muncie), though Neu 5-2 vs. points as non-MAC visitor since 2016).

TOLEDO at KENTUCKY...Stoops 0-9 as Lexington chalk past two years, and no covers last 10 as non-SEC host! Stoops also 2-10 as Commonwealth Stadium chalk since 2015. Rockets subpar 1-4 as dog LY but had been 12-4 vs. spread as visitor the previous three years, and 4-2 vs. line last six as non-MAC visitor.

MISSISSIPPI STATE vs. UL-LAFAYETTE (at Mercedes Benz Superdome, New Orleans)...Moorhead was 7-3 as chalk last season and Bulldogs covered all four non-SEC in reg season, now 7-1 in that role the past two seasons. Moorhead also 5-0 as DD chalk in 2018. Ragin’ Cajuns were 5-2 as dog LY (3-1-1 as DD dog) en route to 8-4-2 vs. line in Napier debut, but just 1-3 last four vs. spread against SEC.

OLE MISS at MEMPHIS...Rebs dropped their last six and nine of their last ten vs. the number last term. No surprise that no covers in the four games as a true visitor. Matt Luke 1-6 as a dog last season as well. Meanwhile Tigers 6-1 vs. line at Liberty Bowl and have won and covered last three at home vs. FBS foes.

GEORGIA STATE at TENNESSEE...GSU 0-4-2 as road dog last season and just 2-10-1 vs. line last 13 reg-season games. Vols, however, just 2-7 as chalk since 2017 (1-2 LY for Pruitt) and just 1-8 last nine vs. points hosting FBS-level foes.

EASTERN MICHIGAN at COASTAL CAROLINA...EMU on extended 18-4 spread run away from Ypsilanti since late 2015. Though almost all of that damage done as dog (2-2 as visiting chalk since 2015). Eagles on 27-11-1 spread uptick for Creighton since late 2015. Chants only 1-4 vs. line at home LY.

SOUTH CAROLINA vs. NORTH CAROLINA (at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte)...Mack Brown II at UNC! Muschamp is 17-10 vs. spread last 27 on board, and Gamecocks have won and covered last four openers. Even in down 2018, however, Heels were 6-3 as dog, and actually covered 10 of last 15 at the end of the Fedora regime.

DUKE vs. ALABAMA (at Mercedes Bbenz Stadium, Atlanta)...Cutcliffe hasn’t faced Saban since 2010, but is 25-12-1 as dog since 2013, 7-4 as DD dog that span. Cutcliffe has also won and covered seven straight openers. Bama has won and covered last four openers, but Tide just 5-8 vs. line last 13 as chalk away from Tuscaloosa.

NORTHWESTERN at STANFORD...NU 8-0 as visiting dog since 2016, 14-3 since 2014. Cats also 14-4-1 as dog since 2016, and 14-4 vs. spread away since 2015. Tree 6-11 last 17 as Farm chalk (though 5-5 last two years)

VIRGINIA TECH at BOSTON COLLEGE...Fuente just 3-7 as visiting chalk with Hokies, who have also failed to cover last two vs. Eagles. BC 4-1-1 as home dog since 2017, 8-2-1 overall as dog past two seasons.

SYRACUSE at LIBERTY...Hugh Freeze Liberty debut! Babers 10-3 vs. line LY, 3-1 as DD chalk, and 10-3 vs. spread last 13 away from Carrier Dome. Cuse 6-2 as chalk LY. Freeze only 4-8 vs. line his last year at Ole Miss (2016).

BOISE STATE vs. FLORIDA STATE (at TIAA Bank Field, Jacksonville)...Taggart just 4-8 vs. line in FSU debut LY. Noles on 8-15-2 spread skid since 2017. Also just 3-7-2 last 12 away from Doak Campbell. Harsin 5-2 as dog with Broncos, and 23-11 vs. spread away from blue carpet.

SMU at ARKANSAS STATE...SMU just 3-8-1 vs. line away from Ford Stadium since 2017. Red Wolves no covers last 8 vs. non-Belt opposition.

Middle Tennessee at MICHIGAN...Stockstill just 7-12 as DD dog the past decade, just 4-7 last 11 vs. non-CUSA teams away from home. Harbaugh just 12-14 laying DDs the past three years and 2-8 last 12 vs. spread against non-Big 10.

MIAMI-OHIO at IOWA...RedHawks 13-6 last 19 as dog, though have failed to cover 4 of last 5 as non-MAC visitor. Hawks on 11-3-1 spread run since late 2017, and Ferentz 13-5-2 last 20 as chalk (5-2 last 7 laying DD). Iowa has also covered last 5 vs. non-Big Ten foes.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN at LSU...Chad Lunsford 12-6-1 vs. line since taking over at GSU in mid 2017. Also 5-1 last six as dog. Eagles also covered all four in reg. season vs. non-Belt LY. LSU 21-13 vs. line for Coach O but Tigers only 1-4 as DD chalk LY and no covers last six as non-SEC host.

GEORGIA at VANDERBILT...Kirby Smart has won and covered big last two vs. Vandy after getting upset at home by Derek Mason in 2016. Dawgs 7-4 as visiting chalk for Smart and 20-10 last 30 overall vs. number. Dores 1-5 as home dog past two years.

VIRGINIA at PITT...Bronco 9-4 vs. line LY and 5-2 vs. line away from home. Pitt just 10-15-1 vs. spread at Heinz Field for Narduzzi but was 4-1-1 as host LY, 5-5 as home dog since 2015. Panthers have won last four in series, covering last three.

MISSOURI at WYOMING...Bohl 14-6 vs. spread at Laramie since 2016 (though just 7-6 last 2 years). Wyo only 2-5 as dog LY but was 12-4 in role previous two years. Bohl also covered last five in 2018, continuing recent streaky nature. Barry Odom 1-5 vs. spread last 6 against non-SEC foes away from Columbia.

OREGON vs. AUBURN (at Jerry Jones Stadium, Arlington)...Cristobal just 5-9 vs. spread for Ducks, who are also 1-7-1 last nine as dog away from Eugene. Cristobal 1-4 vs. spread last five vs. non-Pac 12. Malzahn 6-4-1 vs. line since 2016 as chalk away from Jordan-Hare.

LA TECH at TEXAS...Skip Holtz 14-4-1 as road dog since 2014, 6-2 last 8 as non-CUSA road dog. Tom Herman 0-4 laying DD LY, 1-6 since 2017, 2-11-1 since 2016 at Houston & Texas.

NEW MEXICO STATE at WASHINGTON STATE...Aggies 3-9 vs. line LY, 1-4 as away dog, now 5-15 last 20 vs. spread in reg season. Also 1-6 as DD dog since 2017. Leach 16-10 vs. line since 2017, 3-1 as DD chalk LY.

FRESNO STATE at SOUTHERN CAL...Tedford 20-6-2 vs. line last two years, 7-0 as dog, 12-2-2 vs. spread away from home. Helton on 8-19 spread skid, 3-9 as Coliseum chalk last two years, no covers last three as non-Pac 12 home chalk.

HOUSTON at OKLAHOMA...Holgorsen UH debut! Cougs just 1-2 as dog under Applewhite but were 12-1-1 in role preceding four years under Herman and Levine. Holgorsen 0-7 SU vs. OU while at WVU and 0-4-1 last four. Holgorsen also only 4-10-1 as dog since 2015. But Sooners only 3-6 laying DD in 2018, just 3-5 last 8 vs. line hosting non-Big 12.

NOTRE DAME at LOUISVILLE...Satterfield UL debut! Irish only 2-5-1 laying DD in 2018 and 0-3 laying 20 or more. ‘Ville 1-11 vs. spread LY, though Satterfield 13-3-1 last 17 on board with App State and covered last 3 as dog.
