Atlanta Braves vs. San Diego Padres Betting Predictions

After losing the first game of the series 12-2, the Braves have rattled off two straight against the Padres with both games ending in scores of 5-2. Atlanta hit the ball fairly well in the most recent game on Saturday, going 9/33 as a team with five RBIs. First baseman Matt Olson led the way with three hits and one RBI. Starting pitcher Ian Anderson had a solid outing, allowing two hits, one earned run, and struck out seven batters in 5.2 innings of work. Rookie right-handed pitcher Bryce Elder is scheduled to take the mound Sunday. Elder has seen action in one game this season and gave up six hits, three earned runs, and struck out four batters in 5.2 innings.

The Padres will look to split the series with the Braves after losing on Saturday. San Diego struggled to get anything going with just 4 total hits and two runs. After starting 8/10 in the first two games, third baseman Manny Machado finally cooled off and was held hitless in Saturday’s game. Starting pitcher Nick Martinez did not have his best outing as he gave up seveb hits, four earned runs, and struck out three batters in 5.0 innings pitched. The right-hander Yu Darvish is expected to take the mound for Sunday’s game. Darvish is 0-1 this season with an ERA of 10.57 in 7.2 innings pitched.

I like the value in the Braves moneyline in this matchup. Atlanta is finally starting to heat up a bit after getting off to a slow start. Bryce Elder will make his second career MLB start which could play in the Padres favor, but Yu Darvish got rocked in his last game against the Giants and has shown inconsistencies over the years. With that being said, I do think Darvish will have a better outing on Sunday but still think the Braves bats will do enough damage to get the job done.

Atlanta Braves Betting Analysis

  • SU: 5-5
  • RL: 3-7
  • O/U: 5-4-1

Entering Sunday’s game, the Braves are 5-5 SU, 3-7 ATS, and have an O/U record of 5-4-1. After their win on Saturday, Atlanta is now 8-1 SU in their last nine games when playing on the road against San Diego. The total has gone over in five of Atlanta’s 10 games played this season. Going against this trend, the total has gone under in five of their last six Sunday games played on the road.

The Braves' offense has finally picked up in the last two games after losing four of five. In those two games Atlanta has a batting average of .264 (18-68) and have scored 10 total runs. Throughout the entire season the Braves have a batting average of .238 (14th), on base percentage of .330 (10th), slugging percentage of .409 (10th), and have scored 45 total runs (5th). With a three-hit performance on Saturday Matt Olson continues his hot streak. Olson has a batting average of .412 (14-34), two HR, and two RBIs.

Atlanta used four different pitchers on Saturday with starter Ian Anderson lasting 5.2 innings and allowing just two hits and one run. As a team the Braves have allowed opponents a batting average of .242 (19th) and have an ERA of 4.85 (24th). The rookie right-hander Bryce Elder is scheduled to take the mound Sunday. Elder has seen action in one game this season and gave up six hits, three earned runs, and struck out four batters in 5.2 innings.

San Diego Padres Betting Analysis

  • SU: 5-5
  • RL: 6-4
  • O/U: 3-7

Coming into Sunday’s matchup the Padres are 5-5 SU, 6-4 ATS, and have an O/U record of 3-7. After winning their first four of five games this season the Padres have since gone 1-4 SU. The total has gone under in seven of San Diego’s 10 games this season. Following this trend, the total has gone under in seven of their last nine games against Atlanta.

After a dominating 12-1 game one against the Braves, San Diego’s offensive production has slowed down with just 10 total hits and four total runs over their past two games. On the season the Padres have a batting average of .237 (15th), on base percentage of .320 (12th), slugging percentage of .368 (22nd), and have scored 43 total runs (6th). Third baseman Manny Machado has had an excellent first 10 games with a batting average of .350 (14-40), one HR, and six RBIs.

San Diego used three different pitchers during Saturday’s contest. Starter Nick Martinez struggled a bit as he allowed seven hits and four earned runs. The right-hander Yu Darvish is expected to take the mound for Sunday’s game. Darvish looked good in his first outing against ARI, but really struggled in his second start against the Giants when he gave up right hits, ninr runs, and lasted just 1.2 innings.

Atlanta Braves vs. San Diego Padres Betting Conclusion

The Braves enter this matchup as slight underdogs even after winning two straight against San Diego. Atlanta will be starting a rookie pitcher which could benefit them or be a major disadvantage, only time will tell. The Padres have not won a game this season when Yu Darvish starts and I think that trend will continue on Sunday. Backing Atlanta in this one as San Diego has been struggling since starting the season 4-1.
