MLB Injury Odds Report Monday, May 2

We are now through the first month of the MLB season. The Cincinnati Reds have essentially been eliminated from postseason contention after a ghastly 3-19 start, but every other team still has a glimmer of postseason hope. Injuries have really hurt a few teams though, resulting in changes to their MLB postseason odds.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX

It’s been a rough start to the season for the reigning AL Central champions. The Chicago White Sox were -225 favorites to win the AL Central just two weeks ago, and they were 10-1 to win the World Series. However, they are off to an 8-13 start and are dealing with a host of injuries to key players.

Eloy Jimenez and Lance Lynn are expected to miss at least another month, while Yermin Mercedes has yet to take the field this season. Star reliever Garrett Crochet is out for the season, and Yoan Moncada has missed the last week with an oblique injury. The White Sox are still odds-on favorites to win the AL Central, but they are down to -125 to win the division.

DETROIT TIGERS

The Detroit Tigers were a trendy pick to make the playoffs with a talented, young pitching staff and a new superstar in Javier Baez. However, multiple injuries to that pitching staff have led to the Tigers scrambling to find healthy arms. They currently have the worst record in the American League, and their AL Central odds have jumped from 8-1 to 17-1.

Spencer Turnbull won’t be available until September at the earliest, and both Matt Manning and Casey Mize suffered injuries last week. Relievers Jose Cisnero and Kyle Funkhouser are projected to be out until June as well. Detroit has had to ask Tyler Alexander to move into the rotation, and he has been rocked. That has put a lot of pressure on Eduardo Rodriguez and Tarik Skubal, but both pitchers currently have a negative WAR.

SAN DIEGO PADRES

It’s been impressive to see the San Diego Padres do more than just tread water with so many players injured. Superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. was ruled out for the first two months of the season, but the offense has been good enough to lead the Padres to a 15-8 record. However, the Padres’ odds to win the NL and NL West have dropped as the bullpen is really banged up.

Drew Pomeranz and Michel Baez were both long-term injuries at the start of the season, but Austin Adams and Pierce Johnson are now hurt too. To make matters worse, starter Blake Snell and starter/long reliever Adrian Morejon are both injured, and Mike Clevinger has yet to return from an injury that has kept him out for almost 18 months.
