After finishing seventh in the West with a record of 42-30 SU last year, Los Angeles kept that same ball rolling with another pedestrian start to this season, as the Lakers opened with a lackluster 10-11 SU and 7-14 ATS skid – which was primarily chalked up to growing pains due to the groundbreaking acquisition of Russell Westbrook.

Los Angeles has maintained a similarly deficient pace in January though, considering the Lakers are just 14-13 SU and 13-14 ATS across their last 27 games – yet still seemingly retain the confidence of the oddsmakers, considering L. A. was favored in 20 of those affairs.

On the other hand, Philadelphia posted a surprisingly poor start to the season, as the Sixers kicked things off with a frustrating 16-16 SU and 13-18-1 ATS stretch – while generating just 105.4 PPG offensively across that span.

Philadelphia has been phenomenal since the Holidays though, considering the Sixers boast records of 12-3 SU and 10-5 ATS across their last 15 games – while averaging a lofty 112.8 PPG offensively and surrendering 104.5 PPG defensively during that timeframe.

I’ll lay the points with Philly here, as the Sixers have played excellent recently, highlighted by Doc Rivers’ team sitting at 12-3 SU across their last 15 games, while generating roughly 113 PPG during that span – likely presenting a steep uphill battle for a Lakers squad that’s averaging just 108 PPG across their current 3-5 SU skid.

There’s still plenty of time for the Lakers to turn things around and push for higher seeding; they just need to get healthy first – and ultimately, shoot the ball better, considering L. A. currently ranks 23rd in offensive efficiency and 15th in three-point percentage (1.056 OE, 34.9 % 3FG) – which are especially crippling marks for a squad that also ranks 17th in defensive efficiency (1.067 DE).

Joel Embiid has single-handedly carried Philadelphia in January though, considering the Sixers have scored 113 PPG offensively across their current 12-3 SU run – highlighted by Embiid averaging 34.1 PPG, 10.5 REB, 4.3 AST, and 1.3 BLK during that span.
