Phoenix Suns -4 (-110) @ CHI

In terms of rosters loaded with talent that continue to consistently underperform, Chicago has arguably been the most disappointing of the bunch, considering the Bulls are stationed 11th in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 29-34 on the season, despite having a trio of multi-time All-Stars at their disposal, plus Lonzo Ball, who hasn’t played since January 2022.

For a mid-level team, oftentimes, the Bulls are a flashy underdog option with high-profile scoring threats such as DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine at the helm, however, their ceiling remains limited as long as they shy away from shooting the longball, highlighted by Chicago ranking dead-last in the league in three-point attempts per game and 24th in offensive rating (112.9 ORtg, 29 3PA).

While on the other hand, Phoenix is still recovering from a bit of a bumpy start to the year, currently positioned fourth in the Western Conference standings with a relatively modest record of 34-29.

But you’d never know it based on their recent results, considering the Suns are now 13-5 since mid-January, the the third-best record in the entire league during that span, and newly acquired superstar Kevin Durant just made his debut for them in their latest affair (W – 105-91 @ CHA), quickly elevating them to the favorites to win the West.

Will Phoenix finally put all the pieces together and make a title run? Only time will tell, however, make no mistake about it, the Suns already stood as the far superior team in this matchup prior to the acquisition of Durant, and now, with another MVP-caliber scoring threat added to the equation, they should be able to run middle tier teams like Chicago out of the building.

Trail Blazers-Hawks Over 241.5 (-110)

Speaking of teams that have consistently underachieved throughout the year, neither Portland nor Atlanta own a winning record at this point of the season, with the Hawks currently stationed 8th in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 31-31, and the Blazers positioned 12th in the West at 29-33.

However, their shortcomings certainly don’t stem from a lack of scoring ability,  highlighted by Atlanta and Portland both ranking Top 10 in the league in offensive rating, and Bottom 10 in defensive rating, respectively (ATL – 115 ORtg, 115 DRtg, POR – 117 ORtg, 118 DRtg).

The total for this one is awfully high, but quite frankly, the oddsmakers seem to be teasing ‘over bettors’ by opening the line just south of the 240-point mark, which kinda makes sense after seeing Portland score 110 points or less in back-to-back losses to the Warriors and Pelicans.

Neither of these teams play defense, but given the right set of circumstances, both squads are still more than capable of lighting up the scoreboard, and they do it quite often. So, in a matchup between a pair of squads that have both surrendered 119+ points at the defensive end of the floor in four of their last five games, the ‘over’ is still a solid play, despite the lofty number.

Spencer Dinwiddie Over 6.5 Assists (+115) @ BOS

Spencer Dinwiddie is essentially the placeholder that Brooklyn received in their haul for Kyrie Irving at the trade deadline, who’s been a starter for Dallas all year, accumulating solid averages of 17.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists across roughly 34 minutes per game in 53 appearances for the Mavs this season.

In Dallas, the Mavericks are fortunate enough to have an MVP caliber player in their backcourt averaging over eight assists per game in Luka Doncic. However, at his core, Dinwiddie is a pure point guard, and he tends to thrive as the main distributor within the operation, as opposed to taking a backseat to superstar.

Following the acquisition, it took Dinwiddie a few games to feel things out again in Brooklyn, but he’s been down this road before, and for the time being, he’s the glue that’s holding together the leftovers of this ailing Nets’ squad. Since rejoining the team, Dinwiddie has recorded 6+ assists in five-of-eight contests, and now, he enters Friday having recorded 8+ assists in three straight. So, I’ll back that trend to continue for him in Boston tonight.
