Full disclaimer: I’ve had a difficult time figuring out the Lions until recently. Quite frankly, I can’t remember the last time a team confused me more than Detroit did earlier this year.

Since Week 10, however, the Lions defense has finally shown its true colors, which in some ways, is a deep sigh of relief because Detroit has become exactly the team that I thought it was prior to Week 1 of this season. It just took a little while for me to accept it after backing off my initial criticism of the Lions so quickly. But I’m officially ready to plant my flag again.

In the grand scheme of things, Detroit proved to be a dangerous team last season after finishing 2nd in the NFC North standings with a record of 9-8 behind an offense that ranked 5th in the league in scoring at 26.6 PPG. However, they were still a full step behind the other top contenders as their 28th-ranked defense served as a noticeable crutch. But surely that’s something they would try to improve upon in the years to come, right? Wrong…

Clearly, improving the defense wasn’t an overly huge concern for the Lions’ front office this past offseason, as they elected to spend two of their Top 3 draft choices on RB Jahmyr Gibbs and TE Sam LaPorta – while spending the other pick on a much-needed LB in Jack Campbell.

So, like most fans, I went into this season assuming the Lions defense would stink again after doing very little to improve upon a roster that ranked Bottom 4 in the league last year. But to my surprise, Detroit’s defense played great to open the season, as they held their opponent to 20 points or less in five of eight games out of the gate – and for a brief moment, it seemed like the Lions had a formidable defense to go along with a top-notch offense, which is a dangerous proposition.

But fortunately for the rest of the league, Detroit’s defense has come crashing back down to earth the last few weeks (as expected) as the Lions have now surrendered 26+ points in five straight contests – and they aren’t exactly facing powerhouses either, considering they’ve drawn matchups against the Saints, Chargers, Packers, and Bears (2) during that span.

While on the other side of that same coin, Denver’s offense has certainly had its fair share of ups and downs this season. However, the Broncos have won six of their last seven games, and their offense is finally beginning to heat up as they’ve now scored 21+ points in five of their last six matchups. Give me Denver’s team total over on Saturday night.

Denver Broncos Betting Analysis

The Broncos were the laughing stock of the league in Russell Wilson’s first campaign with the team last season, as they finished dead-last in the AFC West with a record of 5-12 behind an offense ranked 32nd in points scored and a defense ranked 14th in points allowed. In the first few weeks of this season, however, their laughable status seemed to carry over, but in a completely different way, as the Broncos stumbled out to an ugly 1-3 start under new head coach Sean Payton, while contrarily, ranking 10th in points scored and 32nd in points allowed during that span.

But it seems like as soon as Denver was officially declared dead by the vast majority of the football community, the Broncos rose from the ashes and came surging back with a 6-1 run, and now all of a sudden, they sit just one game behind Kansas City in the AFC West standings. I expect Denver to give the Lions everything they can handle in this contest.

Detroit Lions Betting Analysis

According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the SuperBook closed the lookahead line for this contest at Lions -4.5 last Sunday, and then reopened the market a half-point closer to neutral at -4 in the aftermath of Detroit’s ugly loss to Chicago, as the court of public opinion continues its criticism of the Lions after losing two of their last three games and playing incredibly uninspired defense along the way – and quite frankly, I’m surprised the spread didn’t take a bigger jump.
