In the postgame press conference following the Chargers’ frustrating 23-20 loss to Green Bay last week, a reporter questioned head coach Brandon Staley’s role as the team’s defensive play-caller, and Staley sternly retorted, "I have full confidence in our way of playing. Full confidence in myself as the play-caller, in the way that we teach, in the way that we scheme. Full confidence in that…You can stop asking that question. I am going to be calling the defenses. So we’re clear.”

Well, that’s great news for opposing offensive units. The Chargers are currently dead last in the AFC West standings with a record of 4-6 on the season, and their 8th ranked scoring offense certainly isn’t the issue. The LA defense has ranked Bottom 10 in scoring in three straight campaigns under Staley, and this season has arguably been the worst of his tenure. They enter this week ranked 23rd in points allowed and 29th in per play yardage, and five of their six losses have come by three points or less. So quite frankly, it is well within boundaries for reporters to inquire about potential change when it comes to the long-running woes of the Chargers defense.

Here’s a famous quote for you: Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Einstein said it. So don’t get mad at me. But the fact of the matter is, the Chargers’ elite offense has been consistently let down by poor defensive play for several years now (same as this year), and Staley is the mastermind behind their defense – and as he adamantly reiterated in Sunday’s postgame presser, he will continue to lead the defense the same way for the foreseeable future. If only Einstein could see this Chargers team…

But nonetheless, this sets up as an excellent spot to back Baltimore. The Ravens have scored 31+ points in five straight games, and assuming nothing changes for LA’s defense, the sky is the limit for Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore offensive attack. On the flip side, the Ravens defense has been lights out this season, currently ranked 2nd in scoring at 16.1 points allowed per game. And while the Chargers offense tends to find a modest level of success against all opponents regardless of defensive strength, they’ve only crossed the 30-point scoring mark in 2-of-10 contests on the year.

I think we’ll see Baltimore run away with this one late (or maybe early).

Baltimore Ravens Betting Analysis

In the grand scheme of things, I personally find this Baltimore team a little bit overrated. The Ravens are widely considered one of the Top 2 teams in the AFC, and Lamar Jackson is currently listed 2nd on the odds list to win MVP – which is far too much praise, in my opinion.

However, there’s no shame in riding the hot hand. The Ravens offense has been unstoppable since Week 7, having scored 31+ points in five straight games – and not to mention, against some much tougher defensive units than LA’s, as they drew matchups against the Browns, Bengals, Seahawks, Lions, and Cardinals during that span.

If LA’s defense manages to slow down Baltimore, it will be a stunning turn of events. This has the makings of a footrace to the finish line, and the Ravens are the much faster sprinter.

Los Angeles Chargers Betting Analysis

According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the tides are beginning to turn regarding the public opinion of this Chargers team. SuperBook risk advisor Chase Michaelson expects the general betting audience to finally turn on LA this week, “The Chargers continue to bite the public whenever they buy in. We will need them outright, as everything on Sunday night will be tied to Ravens spread and Ravens moneyline.”

There’s no denying the fact that the Chargers wield enough offensive firepower to win any given contest with Justin Herbert at QB, and every now and then, they put it all together to remind us of their towering potential. However, with that said, the Chargers have been telling us exactly who they are for multiple seasons now. I think it’s time we all listen.

Truth be told, I’m starting to feel bad for Herbert. Let the record show, this debacle has nothing to do with him. Herbert is a world class talent, and he leaves it all on the field for this disaster of a team each and every week. Somebody will rescue him eventually.
