Philadelphia Eagles vs. Carolina Panthers Predictions

It’s been a good week for the Carolina Panthers since their loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The Panthers might have Christian McCaffrey back from a hamstring injury, and they were able to trade for Stephon Gilmore . Gilmore won’t be ready to return for another couple weeks at the earliest, but the Panthers are expected to knock off the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

The Eagles have lost three straight games coming into Week 5. Philadelphia’s only victory this season came against lowly Atlanta in Week 1, and this team will lose four in a row this weekend against Carolina.

Philadelphia Eagles Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 1-3
  • ATS: 1-3
  • O/U: 2-2
  • ATS - Home: 0-2
  • ATS - Away: 1-1

Both of Philadelphia’s tackles are injured coming into this game. Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson are considered questionable to play on Sunday. The Eagles do have depth at the position, but it would hurt not to have them.

Jalen Hurts has nice stats this season. The second-year quarterback is completing 66.2% of his passes for 1,167 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. Hurts is also the leading rusher on the Eagles with 226 yards and is averaging 6.6 YPC. However, he hasn’t been sharp early in games and has benefited from putting up stats in garbage time.

The Eagles are averaging 5.4 YPC thanks to Hurts. However, Miles Sanders and Kenneth Gainwell have been effective runners too, as Sanders is averaging 4.6 YPC and Gainwell is averaging 4.4 YPC. Philadelphia is only running the ball on just over 37% of its plays though.

Rookie DeVonta Smith leads the Eagles in receiving. He has 18 receptions for 237 yards and a score this season. Philadelphia loves to throw to tight ends too, so Dallas Goedert and Zach Ertz are major parts of the passing game.

Carolina Panthers Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 3-1
  • ATS: 3-1
  • O/U: 1-3
  • ATS - Home: 2-0
  • ATS - Away: 1-1

McCaffrey’s return would be a big boost to the Panthers in this game. Rookie Chubba Hubbard hasn’t been nearly as effective out of the backfield as a receiver, hurting this offense’s potential. McCaffrey missed last week’s game, but he is the second leading receiver on Carolina with 16 receptions for 163 yards.

Sam Darnold is off to a nice start in Carolina. Darnold is completing 67.8% of his passes for 1,189 yards and averaging 8.1 YPA. He had his worst game of the year last week against Dallas, throwing two interceptions while being sacked five times, but he is a sneaky runner and leads the league with five rushing touchdowns.

The main weapon in the passing game for Carolina is D.J. Moore. Moore has 30 receptions for 398 yards and three touchdowns on the season. Robby Anderson was expected to have a bigger impact due to his rapport with Darnold in New York, but he has a catch rate under 50% and has just 10 receptions for 149 yards and a score.

The Philadelphia Eagles have gone OVER the point total in five of their last seven games when facing the Panthers. (AP)

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Carolina Panthers Betting Conclusion

Carolina’s defense has been very good this year. The Panthers rank third in scoring defense (16.5 PPG) and third in total defense (251.5 YPG). They have the speed at linebacker to contain Hurts, and that will hamper the Eagles on offense. This secondary isn’t great, but Hurts won’t be able to punish it.
