Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Philadelphia Eagles Predictions

After surrendering 41.5 PPG across consecutive matchups against Dallas and Kansas City, the Eagles entered their Week 5 matchup teetering on the fence of wasting away a second straight season – as posting a fourth consecutive loss in Carolina would have all but excluded them from realistic playoff contention in the NFC at a remarkably early part of the year.

When Philadelphia needed its defense most though, Darius Slay and company finally showed up ready to play, as the Eagles’ D got to Sam Darnold for three sacks and three interceptions during their thrilling 21-18 road victory over the Panthers last week.

On the other hand, Tampa Bay briefly fell into a slump back in Weeks 3 and 4 – highlighted by Brady and the Bucs’ offense generated just 21.5 PPG across their underwhelming two-game road trip against the Rams and Patriots.

Tampa Bay bounced back with an excellent offensive performance in Week 5 though, as the Bucs’ erupted for 45 points on 558 total yards during their blowout victory over the Dolphins this past Sunday (W, 45-17).

I’ll take the points with Philadelphia here, as the Eagles’ defense has surrendered 20 points or less in three-of-five contests this season – while Tampa’s offense undeniably struggled in its opening pair of road matchups (21.5 PPG), and things probably won’t get much easier in Philly on Thursday night.

Philadelphia enters Thursday night’s event as a touchdown-underdog against the visiting Buccaneers – marking the fifth straight game that the Eagles have been underdogs in.

The total for Thursday’s affair is stationed around OU 52 at most shops, which leans slightly towards the north side for a matchup containing either of these teams.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 4-1
  • ATS: 2-3
  • O/U: 4-1
  • ATS - Home: 2-1
  • ATS - Away: 0-2

The Buccaneers’ offense has looked virtually unstoppable at home to start the season, considering Tampa Bay has averaged 41.3 PPG on 443.3 YPG across a trio of home matchups against the Cowboys, Falcons, and Dolphins this year.

In their opening pair of road events though, the Tampa Bay consistently struggled to cash in red-zone opportunities, as the Bucs’ averaged just 21.5 PPG on 413.5 YPG across their road outings against the Rams and Patriots.

The Rams and Patriots obviously have excellent defensive squads, and Tampa Bay might have fallen victim to these elite defenses regardless of the game’s location – but with Brady’s growing age, the Bucs’ road struggles appear to have slightly more relevance than just that.

Philadelphia Eagles Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-3
  • ATS: 2-3
  • O/U: 2-3
  • ATS - Home: 0-2
  • ATS - Away: 2-1

After stumbling out to a disappointing 1-3 start under new head coach Nick Sirianni, Eagles’ fans already began to moan and groan about their team’s revamped offensive system – as a fourth straight loss in Carolina would have likely pressured Philly into folding another season away.

Fortunately for Sirianni, who calls plays on offense, Philly’s defense came through in a big way against the Panthers, as the Eagles impressively held Carolina to just 18 points on 267 total yards last week – and also forced three critical turnovers, which barely enabled them to escape with their second victory of the new season.

Philadelphia’s defense got absolutely shredded by the Cowboys and Chiefs, as the Eagles ended up forcing just four total punts across their ugly losses in Weeks 3 and 4.

Overall though, the Eagles defense has looked excellent under new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon – considering Philly has held three-of-five opponents to 20 points or less so far this season, and nearly topped the Niners on the heels of a phenomenal defensive effort (L, 17-11).

The Philadelphia Eagles have gone UNDER the point total in 13 of their last 17 home games. (AP)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Philadelphia Eagles Betting Conclusion

After pulling off a road upset in Carolina last week (W, 21-18), the Eagles head back home for Thursday night’s matchup as a touchdown-underdog against the visiting Buccaneers – which marks the fifth time this season Tampa Bay has been favored by six points or more.

I’ll take the points with Philadelphia here, as the Eagles’ offense has generated 21 points or more in four-of-five contests this year – and 21 points should probably be enough to cover if Philly’s defense shows up again, which is why I’m also backing Brady to throw an interception at plus odds in Thursday night’s event.
