New York Jets vs. Indianapolis Colts Predictions

After acquiring QB Carson Wentz from Philadelphia this past offseason, Indianapolis stumbled out to an incredibly disappointing start with their new signal-caller, as the Colts lost four of five games to kick off the new season – with Indy’s only victory across that time frame coming against Jacoby Brissett and the Dolphins back in Week 4.

Since their bumpy 1-4 start though, Indianapolis has played some solid football, highlighted by the Colts’ back-to-back wins over the Texans and Niners in Weeks 6 and 7 – and a thrilling overtime loss to the Titans in Week 8.

On the other hand, the Jets have ridden a roller coaster of emotions to kick off the new season, considering New York stumbled out to a dismal 0-3 start with losses to the Panthers, Patriots, and Broncos – before finally knocking off the Titans in overtime in Week 4 (W, 27-24 OT).

New York was stopped dead in its tracks in Week 5 though, as rookie QB Zach Wilson went down with a knee injury during the Jets’ atrocious 54-13 loss to New England – quickly thrusting backup QB Mike White into his first NFL action down the stretch of that contest.

White’s relief appearance against New England was somewhat discouraging, considering he threw for just 202 YDS on 62.5% CMP and a pair of picks following Wilson’s exit. White started under-center for the first time in the Jets’ latest affair though, and was absolutely phenomenal – throwing for 405 YDS and three TD’s on 82.2% CMP during New York’s stunning upset victory over the Bengals last week (NYJ +11.5).

I’ll take the points with the Jets here, as White and company went toe-to-toe in a shootout with the red- hot Bengals in their latest matchup (W, 34-31) – which personally, was all I needed to see to warrant taking New York with a double-digit point-total in Thursday’s matchup.

Indianapolis heads into Thursday’s contest as 10.5-point favorites over the visiting Jets, which marks the second time this season this 3-5 Colts’ squad has been listed as double-digit favorites.

The total for Thursday night’s event is stationed near OU 46 at most shops – marking just the second time this season the over-under for a Jets’ games has eclipsed OU 45.

New York Jets Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-5
  • ATS: 2-5
  • O/U: 4-3
  • ATS - Home: 2-1
  • ATS - Away: 0-4

After selecting Wilson with the second pick in the latest NFL draft, New York wasn’t expected to flip the script immediately within the AFC East – but the magnitude of the Jets’ early struggles wasn’t entirely expected either, considering they scored just 6.7 PPG on 250 YPG across the first three weeks of the season.

New York finally received a spark from its backup QB last Sunday though, as the Jets knocked off the Bengals for their second win of the season behind White’s magnificent performance (405 YDS, 3 TD) – and while that doesn’t necessarily mean New York will take down a lesser squad in Indy on Thursday, I strongly advise against laying such a hefty total with the Colts here.

Indianapolis Colts Betting Analysis

  • SU: 3-5
  • ATS: 5-3
  • O/U: 5-3
  • ATS - Home: 2-2
  • ATS - Away: 3-1

After yielding a disappointing 0-3 record across Wentz’s opening stretch of matchups with Indy, most bettors immediately hopped off the Colts’ bandwagon, as Frank Reich’s squad entered Week 4 as slight underdogs against a banged-up Dolphins squad (IND +3).

The Colts finally cranked things up a notch in that matchup though, as they posted a commanding double-digit road victory over Miami in Week 4 (W, 27-17) – and haven’t turned back since, considering Indy heads into Thursday’s event boasting wins in three of the last five games, with their only losses across that span coming in overtime against the Ravens and Titans.

The Jets have lost 31 of their last 33 games when playing as a +7-point underdog or more. (AP)

New York Jets vs. Indianapolis Colts Betting Conclusion

After stunning the Bengals in a shootout last week (W, 34-31), the Jets will travel to Indianapolis for Thursday’s affair as double-digit underdogs against the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium – marking just the second time Indy has been favored by 10 points or more this season.

I’ll take the points with New York here, as Indianapolis is far too inconsistent offensively to trust as double-digit favorites in virtually any matchup – but I still envision the Colts escaping with a narrow victory in Thursday’s matchup, which is why I’m also backing Wentz to make it six straight games with at least two TD passes.
