New England Patriots vs. Carolina Panthers Predictions

Bill Belichick has New England looking competitive once again. The Patriots had a down 2020 campaign, but they are looking more and more like a playoff team with each week. Only one of their losses has been by more than two points in regulation, and they are a little unlucky to be 4-4 right now. That’s why the Patriots are favored on the road against the Carolina Panthers this week.

New England’s last four games have gone over the total. The Patriots’ first four games went under, but we have seen the over cash more often as Mac Jones has developed as a quarterback. Carolina has a very good defense though, so the Panthers will help this game go under the number.

New England Patriots Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 4-4
  • ATS: 4-4
  • O/U: 4-4
  • ATS - Home: 2-3
  • ATS - Away: 2-1

Jones has been the best performing rookie quarterback so far this season. Jones was the fifth quarterback taken in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but the only one that would be drafted ahead of him now is Trevor Lawrence. He doesn’t have great receivers, but his production has improved over the last month as he gets a better grasp of the offense.

New England wants to run the ball with Damien Harris as much as it can to take the burden off Jones. Harris is averaging 4.4 YPC, and he has run for over 100 yards in two of the Patriots’ last three games. Rookie Rhamondre Stevenson has not had the same fortune, leading to him falling behind Brandon Bolden on the depth chart.

The Patriots have an above average defense. New England ranks eighth in scoring defense (20.5 PPG) and 12th in total defense (352.9 YPG). Chase Winovich is expected to miss one more game with a hamstring injury, and Dont’a Hightower and Kyle Van Noy are considered questionable.

Carolina Panthers Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 4-4
  • ATS: 4-4
  • O/U: 2-6
  • ATS - Home: 2-2
  • ATS - Away: 2-2

Christian McCaffrey is hoping to return for this game. Carolina’s do-it-all running back has been sidelined since Week 3 with a hamstring injury, and that has hurt this offense. McCaffrey is only averaging 3.9 YPC, but he is still the third leading receiver on the Panthers.

The deterioration in Sam Darnold’s play has been an issue too. He has thrown seven interceptions in the last five games, and he is averaging 5.4 YPA or less in each of Carolina’s last four games. Darnold is dealing with a concussion and a shoulder injury, and if he can’t play then it will be up to P.J. Walker to lead the Panthers.

D.J. Moore has been the only bright spot for this offense. Moore has 50 receptions for 645 yards this season, and no other player has more than 18 receptions or 205 yards on the Panthers. Chuba Hubbard has not been great as a runner or receiver, so Carolina is not as productive with the ball.

Stephon Gilmore can’t wait for this week. Gilmore was a two-time First Team All-Pro with the Patriots, and he was the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Gilmore was traded to Carolina last month, and that has helped make the Panthers one of the best pass defenses in the league. Carolina is allowing 5.9 YPA and 188.9 YPG through the game, and this defense ranks 4th in sack rate.

The New England Patriots have seen the road team won seven of their last eight games. (AP)

New England Patriots vs. Carolina Panthers Betting Conclusion

Darnold’s woes will continue this weekend against the Patriots. New England should be able to shut down Carolina’s run game and limit Moore, allowing Jones to get the job done and move the Pats to 5-4.
