Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets Predictions

It was too soon to crown the Buffalo Bills as the favorites in the AFC. This conference is wide open, and the Bills have yet to show they can take down the top teams. Although they have a win over Kansas City, they lost to both Pittsburgh and Tennessee and failed to score in the second half of last week’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. They are a two-touchdown road favorite for the second straight week against the New York Jets.

Buffalo had hammered all of the subpar teams it had faced until last week’s outright loss to Jacksonville. The Bills haven’t been as productive on offense in the last few weeks, and the Jets have shown they can surprise teams at home. Mike White is expected to return, and that should help Gang Green stay within the number.

Buffalo Bills Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 5-3
  • ATS: 4-3-1
  • O/U: 3-5
  • ATS - Home: 2-1-1
  • ATS - Away: 2-2

Josh Allen is no longer the sole favorite to be named NFL MVP. Allen’s poor performance against the Jaguars last week led to him falling into a tie with Tom Brady. He has put up gaudy numbers against bad teams but opposing defenses might have started to figure this offense out. Allen has averaged 5.9 YPA or less in four of his eight starts.

Buffalo might have three 1,000-yard receivers this season. Stefon Diggs, Emmanuel Sanders, and Cole Beasley all have at least 445 receiving yards. In a change from last season, it’s Sanders that has been the deep threat though, averaging 17.1 YPR.

This ground game has not been as effective as it was last year. Zack Moss has been better as a receiver out of the backfield than as a runner, and Devin Singletary might not crack 800 rushing yards this year. Allen is a very mobile quarterback though.

The Bills have the best defense in the NFL according to basic stats. Buffalo is allowing just 14.8 PPG and 262.6 YPG. Opponents are averaging just 4.5 yards per play against this unit as Tre’Davious White is an elite cornerback, and Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde make up an excellent safety tandem.

New York Jets Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-6
  • ATS: 2-6
  • O/U: 5-3
  • ATS - Home: 2-1
  • ATS - Away: 0-4

Rookie Zach Wilson is likely to miss at least one more week with a knee injury. He suffered the injury in the Jets’ blowout loss to New England, but that has allowed Mike White to become the most popular man in the Meadowlands. White led the Jets past the Cincinnati Bengals two weeks ago, and he was sharp against Indianapolis on Thursday before leaving early with a minor injury.

White has made this moribund offense more explosive. This offense is expected to have top receiver Corey Davis back after he missed the last two weeks with a hip injury, and that should make the Jets more respectable in the passing game.

The ground game has not been good though. The Jets are averaging just 3.7 YPC and 77.1 YPG, ranking in the bottom five in both categories. Michael Carter has been a competent receiver out of the backfield though.

This is the worst defense in the league. The Jets rank last in scoring defense (31.4 PPG) and total defense (408.1 YPG). Shaq Lawson is questionable to play this week, but C.J. Mosley is finally on the field and playing at a high level.

The Buffalo Bills have won eight straight divisional games. (AP)
