Washington Football Team vs. Philadelphia Eagles Predictions

Washington and Philadelphia head into Tuesday's game tied for the final playoff spot in the NFC, so this is a huge game. The game was rescheduled from Sunday to Tuesday due to a COVID-19 outbreak amongst the Washington Football Team. While the quick turnaround for Philadelphia heading into Week 16 will be difficult, at least QB Jalen Hurts (ankle) gets a chance to rest his ankle for a couple more extra days. So the delay, which hurts the Eagles a little bit, at least gives them a chance to get some extra rest for bumps and bruises at key positions. And 48 extra hours doesn't necessarily guarantee the key players will Washington will have negative tests and be ready to play.

Washington QB Taylor Heinicke was placed on the reserve/COVID list due to COVID-19, as is backup QB Kyle Allen. If neither of the signal callers are ready by Tuesday, the starting duties might fall to either QB Kyle Shurmur, who has never appeared in an NFL game, or QB Garrett Gilbert, who was just plucked from the New England Patriots' practice squad on Friday. It's a messy situation in a key game for WFT.

Philadelphia also has a couple of players on the reserve/COVID list, WR Quez Watkins and a practice squad player, but the COVID was believed to have been contained to just those two individuals.

Washington Football Team Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 6-7
  • ATS: 5-8
  • O/U: 5-8
  • ATS - Away: 3-3

Washington has posted a 4-1 ATS mark across the past five games overall. They failed to cover last time out against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14, losing 27-20 as 6.5-point underdogs. They made a valiant effort, however, outscoring the Cowboys 12-0 in the fourth quarter to make a game of it. Washington nearly pulled off the miracle backdoor cover despite a minus-2 turnover differential, mainly due to a LB Cole Holcomb pick-six in the fourth.

While WFT is 4-1 ATS in the past five, all bets are off, pun totally intended, if Heinicke and Allen are each sidelined, and the starting chores under center come down to either Shurmur or Gilbert. That's a disaster waiting to happen, as the playbook will be severely limited for either option.

Washington is 1-4 ATS in the past five games against NFC East teams, while going 2-5 ATS in the past seven games against losing teams. WFT is also 2-6 ATS in the past eight following a non-cover, and all of these trends still apply.

Philadelphia Eagles Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 6-7
  • ATS: 7-6
  • O/U: 7-6
  • ATS - Home: 2-3

The Eagles could be catching a huge break if Washington doesn't get key personnel back, especially under center. Philadelphia posted a 33-18 win on the road against the New York Jets last time out in Week 13, and have been on a bye. They get two extra days to mend, so the Eagles will be healthy and strong for the stretch run, seemingly in a lot better shape than Washington for that final wild-card spot in the NFC.

Philadelphia has covered three of the past four games overall, and they're 4-1 ATS in the past five games as a favorite, too. While the Eagles are 1-4 ATS in the past five games inside the division, they're 6-2 ATS in the past eight games overall against Washington.

The OVER is also 5-2 in the past seven meetings with WFT in Philadelphia, while going 5-2 in the past seven games overall for the Eagles. The OVER is also 35-16 in the past 51 games in the month of December for the Eagles.

The Eagles are 6-2 ATS in the past eight meetings against the Washington Football Team. (AP)

Washington Football Team vs. Philadelphia Eagles Betting Conclusion

Washington had been playing pretty well, working its way back into the playoff mix with a four-game win streak, including a home win over the defending champ Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10. However, a home loss to the Cowboys took some wind out of their sails, and now this COVID thing really has them up against it as they cling to a playoff spot. The game hasn't been played, but the COVID situation has really backed them into a corner.

The Eagles are on much better footing, coming off a bye to get right in the health department, and they'll just be chilling at home waiting for game night on Tuesday, while Washington scrambles just to be able to field a team. Advantage Philadelphia. The good news for Washington is that their defense has showed up this season, ranking fifth against the rush by allowing just 93.6 yards per game. That will be their only hope, as they try and corral the dual-threat Hurts. If they can keep him contained in the run game, forcing him to beat them through the air, Washington will have a chance. But even then, the offense might not be able to do enough to get them by.
